Project Overview

The Moda Fabrics Grunge Quilt is an intermediate-level quilting project designed by Moda Fabrics, featuring the Grunge fabric collection by Basic Grey. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished quilt measuring 48 inches by 60 inches, making it an ideal size for throws, lap quilts, or bed toppers. The design employs a classic block-based construction method with alternating dark and light fabric placement to create visual contrast and movement throughout the finished piece.

Fabric Requirements and Materials

This quilt pattern utilizes a Grunge Jelly Roll (product code 30150JR) as the primary fabric source, which contains 40 pre-cut strips measuring 2½ inches by the width of fabric. Additional fabric requirements include:

  • 1 Grunge Jelly Roll (30150JR) for quilt blocks
  • ½ yard of Grunge fabric (product code 30150 225) for binding
  • 3⅛ yards of fabric for quilt backing

The featured fabric throughout the quilt is Grunge by Basic Grey, a coordinated collection that provides the color palette and design continuity for the entire project.

Cutting and Fabric Preparation

The jelly roll strips are cut into specific pieces to create the individual quilt blocks. From each of the 40 pre-cut strips included in the jelly roll, quilters cut the following:

  • Six 2½-inch squares
  • Four 2½-inch by 6½-inch rectangles

For the binding, six strips measuring 2½ inches by the width of fabric are cut from the designated binding fabric and sewn end to end to create one continuous binding strip. Selvages should be trimmed away before cutting to ensure accurate piece dimensions.

Quilt Block Construction

The quilt is constructed using a repeating block unit assembled from mixed fabric prints within the Grunge collection. Each block requires:

  • Two 2½-inch squares from one print
  • Two 2½-inch by 6½-inch rectangles from the same print
  • One 2½-inch square from a different print

Blocks are assembled using a standard ¼-inch seam allowance, which is essential for accurate piecing and proper block sizing. Seams are pressed in the direction indicated by arrows in the pattern instructions to reduce bulk and facilitate proper nesting of seams when blocks are joined together.

Quilt Assembly and Layout

The completed blocks are arranged in a 10-row by 8-block configuration, creating the 48-inch by 60-inch finished size. The pattern specifically calls for alternating dark and light blocks throughout the layout to create visual interest and balance. To avoid the appearance of matching seams that can create visual lines across the quilt surface, alternate blocks are rotated a quarter turn during arrangement.

Seams between rows are pressed in opposite directions from row to row, a technique that allows seams to nest together properly when rows are joined. This opposing press direction reduces bulk at seam intersections and helps create a flatter, more professional-looking finished quilt.

Finishing Techniques

Once the quilt top is fully assembled, the three layers—quilt top, batting, and backing fabric—are layered together. The quilt is then quilted using the method of the maker's choice, and finally bound using the prepared binding strips. These finishing steps complete the quilt and provide durability for regular use and washing.

Skill Level and Pattern Format

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for quilters who have completed basic quilting projects and are comfortable with piecing accuracy, seam pressing techniques, and quilt assembly. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access and the ability to print the instructions for reference while working on the project.
