This is a lovely easy to wear, oversized cardigan. It has been designed for someone who has mastered the basics of knitting: casting on and off, increasing and decreasing, Knit, Purl and includes a very basic cable.
It is made using Rowan Brushed Fleece yarn and knits up quite quickly on 6mm knitting needles. It took me about 50 hours in total to complete.
It was inspired by the cardigans my grandad used to wear, but has been given a feminine 80's vibe with its slightly bomber jacket styling.
The single cable detail on the left front adds some edgy detailing with big patch pockets for all of your essentails. Perfect for when you want to travel light.
The pattern also includes instructions to make the Grace Sweater, a lovely simple variation on this design.
I feel really cool and funky when I wear this cardigan, it looks great with skinny jeans and chunky boots, or wear it at home with your favourite joggers for a warm and cosy evening in.
The Martha Cardigan is a super relaxed, oversized cardigan designed by independent knitting designer Suzy Rai. This project is specifically created for beginners who have mastered the basics of knitting. The cardigan knits up fairly quickly thanks to its chunky weight yarn construction, making it an excellent first introduction to simple cable pattern work.
This is a button-front cardigan with a generous, oversized fit. The garment features a relaxed silhouette with long sleeves and a hemmed edge. Four 2.5cm diameter buttons fasten the front opening. The cardigan is designed to be worn with intentional ease and comfort, with measurements that allow for 1-2cm of additional give when worn due to the nature of the fabric.
The Martha Cardigan incorporates cable knitting as its primary stitch technique, making it an excellent beginner-friendly introduction to cable work. The pattern uses the fundamental cable abbreviation C4B (cable 4 back), which involves slipping stitches onto a cable needle and placing them at the back of the work before knitting. This creates the characteristic twisted, rope-like texture that defines cable knit garments.
This project uses Rowan Brushed Fleece yarn in chunky weight. The yardage requirements vary by size:
Needles and additional tools include 5mm and 6mm single point needles and a cable needle for executing cable stitches.
Using 6mm needles, the correct tension is 14 stitches over 23 rows to achieve a 10cm square. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the cardigan to knit to the intended measurements.

Looks lovely but started knitting up and it’s huge. Says I need 10 balls of wall and I used 6 just for the back piece, not sure what’s gone wrong because I’ve followed it all as it’s said going to keep going and just make a huge cardigan I guess
I’m rating this lower for now as I have t finished. I’ve done the back one sleeve and one front and it looks bigger than I expected. I was a bit confused with the way the front is made but I’ve got it now and it’s fine. I had very helpful and patient support on lovecrafts live chat
