Product Description
MALIA is a warm, textured blanket in three sizes (and customisable to many more) featuring an all-over garter mosaic stitch in two contrasting colours, with a simple and bold garter stitch border.
The garter ridges in the main stitch motif trap air for added warmth and also provide a squishy but strong textured fabric that is perfect for hibernating beneath on cold days.
This blanket is knit in a striking mosaic motif that only requires one colour to be worked in any given row, meaning there are no floats at the reverse of the knitting.
This blanket can be knit in any aran weight yarn that knits to the correct gauge and provides you with a texture you enjoy.

What is Being Made
The Malia Blanket is a warm, textured blanket available in three customizable sizes: Baby (75x100cm or 30x40"), Crib (90x125cm or 35x50"), and Long Throw (125x190cm or 50x75"). This knitted blanket features an all-over garter mosaic stitch pattern worked in two contrasting colors, complemented by a simple and bold garter stitch border. The design creates a squishy yet structurally strong fabric ideal for cozy layering and comfort.
Techniques Used
The Malia Blanket employs garter mosaic stitch as its primary technique, which combines the textural qualities of garter stitch with a two-color mosaic approach. This method involves alternating colors in a strategic pattern to create visual interest while maintaining fabric integrity. The garter ridges formed throughout the main stitch motif work to trap air within the fabric structure, significantly enhancing the blanket's warmth and insulation properties. A garter stitch border frames the entire piece, providing a clean, bold finish. The construction uses circular needles worked flat, allowing for seamless management of the large blanket dimensions.
Stitches Used
- Garter Mosaic Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the blanket body, creating the textured, air-trapping surface
- Garter Stitch: Used for the border section, providing a simple yet striking frame
Materials
This intermediate-level knitting project uses Debbie Bliss Donegal Luxury Tweed Aran yarn in an aran weight. The sample shown features shades 12 'Rich Gold Mustard' as the main color and shade 6 'Eggplant' as the contrasting color. 5mm circular needles with a cable length appropriate to your chosen blanket size are required, with the option of using a second needle for the border section. Additional notions include eight stitch markers and a knitters or large darning needle for finishing ends. The gauge is 15.5 stitches and 27 rows per 10cm (4") in the main pattern.
