These Tunisian crochet mitts are inspired by Lolly Willowes, a novel by Sylvia Townsend Warner. The main character refuses to live her life according to the social expectations of early 19th century England. She buys a small cottage in the countryside and becomes a sort of witch, that is, a capable, independent, smart woman. In the end, she also finds a very intriguing lover. I like to think of her carding and spinning yarn to crochet these strong, practical and at the same time “with character” mitts.

Lolly Willowes è la protagonista dell'omonimo romanzo femminista di Sylvia Townsend Warner (pubblicato da Adelphi). Si ribella alle convenzioni dell'epoca, che la vorrebbero zitella infelice, e compra una casetta nel bosco per vivere in modo autosufficiente. Mi piace pensarla a filare la lana che poi userà per lavorare questi guanti, serena, senza nessuno che la disturbi, davanti al suo camino.
