Product Description
This tunic is made for a newborn girl. I think we all need a bit of bright colours in our lives these days so I decided to make it in lovely peach. The measurements are: Chest circumference 44 cm Length 34 cm Width at the bottom 72 cm.
Any DK yarn can be used for this project and only one 100g ball is required. I suggest James C. Brett Supreme Soft&Gentle Baby DK. The tunic is worked bottom up flat and later seamed at the sides. It can be done in the round too but I personally am not a big fan of working in the round ,don't ask me why :)
The written pattern is very easy to follow and understand. Every step and almost every row is clearly explained so all what you need to do is mark completed sections and you will never get lost :)
Hope you will enjoy this project and I wish you very happy knitting ❤❤❤
Little Sunshine Tunic by Sugar Lambs
What is Being Made
The Little Sunshine Tunic is a delicate newborn girl's dress designed by Irena Cep. This garment features a tunic silhouette with generous proportions, measuring 44 cm chest circumference, 34 cm in length, and 72 cm width at the bottom. The tunic is constructed using a bottom-up flat knitting method with side seaming, making it an accessible project for intermediate knitters seeking to create a heirloom-quality baby garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create visual interest and structure. The tunic is worked flat on needles from the bottom edge upward, then seamed at the sides for a finished construction. The design incorporates strategic decreasing to shape the garment, with decreases worked at specific intervals to achieve the fitted silhouette. Cable work is featured as a decorative element, requiring the use of a cable needle to manipulate stitches and create dimensional texture.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Little Sunshine Tunic combines multiple stitch patterns to create depth and visual appeal:
- Garter stitch forms the foundation at the lower edge, providing a textured, reversible border
- Stockinette stitch comprises the main body of the tunic, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric ideal for newborn wear
- 3x3 left and right cross cables add decorative patterning and textural variation throughout the design
Stitch markers are recommended to separate pattern panels and maintain accuracy during cable work, while a tapestry needle is essential for seaming the side seams and weaving in yarn ends.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This project is designed to use DK weight yarn, a versatile yarn weight ideal for baby garments due to its softness and drape. The pattern requires only one 100g ball of yarn, making it an economical choice for creating a complete tunic. The designer suggests James C. Brett Supreme Soft&Gentle Baby DK, a yarn specifically formulated for delicate baby skin.
Essential tools include 3mm needles (straight or circular needles are both suitable), a cable needle for managing cable stitches, stitch markers for panel separation, and a tapestry needle for finishing. The pattern also calls for four buttons to complete the design, adding both functional and decorative elements to the finished tunic.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to incorporate cable work and shaping techniques into their projects. The combination of basic stitches with cable patterns and strategic decreasing provides an engaging challenge without overwhelming newer knitters.
