Linn Scarf & Hat Knitting Pattern by MillaMia – Beginner Stripe Set in Aran Weight Yarn

The Linn Scarf & Hat is a coordinating knitted accessories set designed for women, published by MillaMia as a downloadable PDF pattern. The set consists of two pieces: a generously sized striped scarf and a matching striped hat sized to fit an average adult head. Both projects are rated beginner level, making this an ideal pattern for newer knitters who want to practise colour work in a straightforward, rewarding format. The stripe sequences use the same three colours across both garments, creating a cohesive, wearable set.

The Linn Scarf

What Is Being Made

The scarf is a long, thick, striped accessory measuring approximately 14cm (5½in) wide by 186cm (73¼in) long. It is intentionally constructed as a doubled-up piece — knitted flat and then sewn together along the long edge — which gives it extra body, warmth, and prevents the rolling edges that are common in standard stocking stitch scarves. The finished ends feature a small section of garter stitch that frames the scarf neatly and indicates the final width before seaming.

Techniques Used

  • Worked flat on straight needles throughout
  • Stripe knitting using three colours in sequence
  • Slip-stitch colour management — a clever flat-knitting technique where, instead of cutting and rejoining yarn at every stripe change, the work is slid to the opposite end of the needle so that the correct colour is always waiting at the right position; this eliminates yarn ends and keeps the fabric tidy
  • Doubling and seaming — the knitted fabric is folded and sewn along the long edge to create a double-thickness scarf
  • Garter stitch border sections at each end

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (stockinette) — the main body fabric, worked in alternating knit and purl rows; because of the slip-stitch stripe technique, two consecutive right-side rows and two consecutive wrong-side rows are worked rather than the usual alternating sequence
  • Garter stitch — knit every row, used at the scarf ends to create a non-rolling, decorative border

Materials for the Scarf

  • Four 50g/1¾oz balls of MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran in Pink Glaze (223) — colour A (main colour)
  • Two balls of MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran in Cinder (201) — colour B
  • One ball of MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran in Ochre (240) — colour C
  • A pair of 4.5mm (US 7) needles and a pair of 5mm (US 8) needles

The Linn Hat

What Is Being Made

The hat is a striped knitted beanie designed to fit an average adult head. It coordinates directly with the Linn Scarf, using the same three MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran colours — simply with the dominant colour swapped so that Cinder (201) takes the lead role in the hat, while Pink Glaze (223) and Ochre (240) appear as contrast stripes. This reversal of the colour hierarchy gives the set a considered, intentional look when worn together.

Techniques Used

  • Worked flat on straight needles for the main body of the hat
  • Stripe knitting using the same slip-stitch colour management technique described for the scarf — sliding the work to the opposite needle end so that the correct yarn colour is always in position without cutting
  • Decreasing to shape the crown of the hat
  • Use of double-pointed needles for working the crown shaping as stitch counts reduce
