Product Description

This pattern combines a love of the fall season with a love of colorwork. You’ll find a selection of four different motifs: a vertical decorative design suitable for variegated yarns, spiders, a jack-o-lantern with a fun all-over skull and crossbones design on the back, and a not-too-scary haunted village.

Choose from two pumpkin tops, creating either a round or an oblong pumpkin.

Enjoy making these colorful, cheerful, and full-of-fall pumpkins for your home or to give as gifts.

While the pattern provides instruction on the increases, decreases, and i-cord, it assumes working knowledge of stranded knitting and reading colorwork charts.

Note: 5 pages of pattern are instructions; 7 pages are colorwork charts.

Tech edited and test knitted.

Large Colorwork Pumpkin by Carol Herman

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern creates decorative fall pumpkins featuring vibrant colorwork designs. The Large Colorwork Pumpkin is an intermediate-level project perfect for knitters looking to combine seasonal decoration with colorwork techniques. Each finished pumpkin measures approximately 8–12 inches in diameter and height, making them ideal display pieces for autumn home décor or thoughtful handmade gifts.

Design Options and Motifs

The pattern offers four distinct colorwork motifs to choose from, allowing crafters to customize their pumpkins based on personal preference:

  • Spider motif – A classic fall design featuring arachnid imagery
  • Vertical decorative design – Specifically suited for variegated yarns, adding visual interest through yarn color variation
  • Jack-o-lantern with skull and crossbones – A playful front design paired with an all-over skull and crossbones pattern on the back
  • Haunted village – A not-too-scary autumn scene perfect for those seeking a more whimsical approach

Shaping Options

Knitters can choose between two pumpkin silhouettes. The round top option creates a classic pumpkin shape as shown in the primary pattern photos. Alternatively, a steeper top variation (detailed on page 5) produces a more oblong pumpkin shape, offering design flexibility based on desired finished appearance.

Knitting Techniques and Skills

This intermediate pattern develops and applies several essential colorwork and shaping techniques:

  • Colorwork fundamentals – Working with two colors simultaneously and reading colorwork charts
  • Float management – Trapping floats to maintain fabric integrity and prevent long strands on the back
  • Increases – Kfb (knit front and back), kfbf (knit front, back, and front), m1r (make one right), and m1l (make one left) for shaping the pumpkin body
  • Decreases – K2tog (knit two together), p2tog (purl two together), and ssk (slip, slip, knit) for finishing and shaping
  • Circular knitting – Working in the round to create seamless pumpkin pieces
  • I-cord – Creating a decorative stem or finishing detail

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The pattern uses worsted weight or aran weight yarn in two contrasting colors. Approximately 200 yards of each color is required to complete one pumpkin. Scrap yarn is optional, likely for securing pieces or creating additional embellishments. The finished dimensions and overall appearance will vary based on the amount of fiberfill stuffing used during assembly, allowing crafters to adjust firmness and shape to preference.

Finished Dimensions

Completed pumpkins measure approximately 8–12 inches in both diameter and height, depending on the selected motif and amount of fiberfill used during stuffing. This size range makes the pumpkins substantial enough to serve as meaningful decorative accents or gifts.

Always a There to Meet My Needs

The pattern was easy to follow and straightforward. I loved the design once completed. The theme is spooky yet it fits with a more traditional living room display or casual on the front porch.
