I played with various yarns, boucle, Sirdar Snowflake Chunky, James C Brett Flutterby and Rico Fashion Fur. I would think any textured yarn would work. I've heard that Pipsqueak is very similar to Sirdar Snowflake and I know it is lovely for toy knitting.
Contrasts are knitted in Aran/Worsted weight.
