Knitted Baby Blanket Schaafi No. 224
Project Overview
The Knitted Baby Blanket Schaafi is a charming intermediate-level knitting project designed by WoolAffair. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 24 inches by 28 inches (60 cm by 70 cm), making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or small throw. The design incorporates decorative elements that add visual interest and personality to a functional piece.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a knitted baby blanket featuring integrated decorative details. The blanket serves as both a practical item for warmth and a charming nursery accessory. The design includes embellished elements such as safety eyes and fiberfill stuffing, suggesting the blanket may feature a playful character or appliqué design element that appeals to both babies and parents.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 400 grams of white yarn in Worsted/Aran weight (approximately 160 meters per 100 grams) and 50 grams of grey yarn in Light DK/Fine weight (approximately 150 meters per 100 grams)
- Needles: Circular needles or straight needles in US size 8/UK size 6, plus a set of double-pointed needles in US size 6/UK size 8
- Notions: 1 meter of black thread, 2 safety eyes measuring 3.5 inches, 1 ounce of fiberfill stuffing, and a sewing needle without a tip
- Tools: Scissors for finishing
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Schaafi blanket employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques appropriate for crafters with some experience. The pattern uses garter stitch as a primary stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch is worked by knitting every row, making it ideal for blankets as it lies flat and provides excellent drape.
Additional techniques incorporated into the pattern include:
- Yarn overs (yo): Used to create decorative eyelet or lace elements within the blanket structure
- Increases (incr-5): A specialized increase technique that adds five stitches at once, allowing for shaping or creating design features
- Decreases (k2tog): Knit two stitches together to reduce stitch count and create shaping
- Through back loop (tbl): Stitches worked through the back loop to create twisted stitches or textural variation
- Selvedge stitch (SS): Edge stitches that create clean, finished edges suitable for seaming or binding off
Gauge and Construction
The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches by 4 inches (10 cm by 10 cm) when worked in garter stitch on US size 8/UK size 6 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The use of both circular needles and double-pointed needles suggests the pattern may incorporate both flat and circular knitting sections, or may use double-pointed needles for specific details or three-dimensional elements like the embellished features.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more complex techniques. The combination of garter stitch foundation with specialty increases, decreases, and the integration of embellishments requires solid fundamental skills and the ability to follow detailed instructions.
Yarn Weight Considerations
The pattern utilizes two different yarn weights to create contrast and visual interest. The primary white yarn in Worsted/Aran weight provides structure and body to the blanket, while the grey yarn in Light DK/Fine weight is used for accent details. This combination of weights adds depth to the design and allows for both bold and delicate elements within a single project.
