Khanyisa Cardigan by BiggerthanlifeKnits

What is Being Made

The Khanyisa is a cropped cardigan designed as a versatile layering piece perfect for transitional seasons and cooler spring and summer days. This top-down raglan style cardigan features three-quarter length sleeves and a simple, elegant construction that works well for intermediate knitters seeking a straightforward yet polished finished garment.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting construction methods suitable for intermediate skill levels. The top-down raglan construction method begins at the neckline and works downward, allowing for easy fit adjustments and seamless integration of sleeve increases. Knitters will work in the round using circular needles for the body and can optionally transition to double-pointed needles for sleeve completion. The pattern includes techniques for managing raglan shaping through strategic increases that create the characteristic diagonal lines from shoulder to underarm.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the Khanyisa is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a defined right side and textured reverse side. This fundamental stitch pattern provides an excellent canvas for showcasing the yarn's color and fiber characteristics while remaining accessible for intermediate-level knitters.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Khanyisa is constructed using African Expressions – Freedom yarn in color 5735, a DK weight yarn composed of 75% wool and 25% acrylic. Each ball contains approximately 100 meters or 109 yards of yardage. Pattern sizes require between 7 and 12 balls depending on the finished size, totaling 660 to 1,150 meters (722 to 1,258 yards) of yarn.

Needles and Tools Required

  • US 6 (4mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80cm) long for the main fabric
  • US 7 (4.5mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches (80cm) long for ribbed edgings
  • US 6 (4mm) double-pointed needles (optional) for completing sleeves if preferred
  • Stitch markers (4 required) for tracking raglan increases and pattern sections
  • Scrap yarn for holding stitches
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 33 rows in stockinette stitch measuring 4 inches by 4 inches (10cm by 10cm) when worked on US 6 (4mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements. The pattern provides eight size options to accommodate various body measurements and fit preferences.

Pattern Overview

The Khanyisa represents a straightforward intermediate knitting project that combines essential techniques with a wearable, seasonally appropriate design. The top-down raglan construction eliminates the need for seaming while the three-quarter sleeve length offers versatility for layering. This pattern is designed for personal use only and is the intellectual property of designer Noma Ndlovu.
