Product Description

The Kathryn Wrap Top was inpsired by a vintage sewing pattern. This pattern uses mostly simple stitches, and foundation stitches in a new way to create a shaped neckline. The simple stitches allows one to have fun with a solid color or a lovely variegated yarn.

This pattern is size-inclusive to fit X-Small through 5X-Large, and tips are included to adjust the length for the perfect fit. There are 2 inches of positive ease included and the garment is meant to be wide in order to wrap around the body for full coverage.

Pair your new top with jeans, or over a dress for a night out with friends or a lunch date.

What is Being Made

The Kathryn Wrap Top is a crocheted garment designed as a versatile layering piece. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a wrap-style top available in six sizes ranging from X-Small through 4X-Large, making it accessible for various body types and fit preferences.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the crochet technique. Crochet is a fiber arts method that uses a single hook to loop yarn into interconnected stitches, building fabric from the ground up. The wrap top construction demonstrates intermediate-level crochet skills, requiring familiarity with pattern reading, stitch consistency, and garment shaping.

Stitches Used

The Kathryn Wrap Top employs several fundamental crochet stitches to create its structure and texture:

  • FSC (Foundation Single Crochet): Used to create the foundation chain, providing a stable base for the garment
  • CSDC (Centered Single Crochet Double Crochet): A combination stitch that appears throughout the pattern rows, creating visual interest and texture
  • DC (Double Crochet): A taller stitch used in rows to build height and drape in the fabric
  • SC (Single Crochet): The shortest basic crochet stitch, used in specific rows for definition and texture variation
  • BLO (Back Loop Only): A technique where single crochet stitches are worked through only the back loop of the previous row's stitches
  • FLO (Front Loop Only): A technique where single crochet stitches are worked through only the front loop of the previous row's stitches

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Kathryn Wrap Top pattern calls for Noro Kibou yarn in a medium weight #4 (aran weight). This yarn is composed of 54% Cotton, 34% Wool, and 12% Silk, offering a blend of natural fibers that provides breathability, warmth, and subtle sheen. Each skein contains 147.64 yards (135 meters) and weighs 1.76 ounces (50 grams).

Yarn quantities vary by size: X-Small requires 5 skeins, Small requires 6 skeins, Medium requires 6 skeins, Large requires 8 skeins, 1X-Large requires 9 skeins, 2X-Large requires 10 skeins, 3X-Large requires 11 skeins, 4X-Large requires 12 skeins, and the largest size requires 13 skeins. The pattern specifies Color 16 (greens) for the original design.

Since Noro Kibou has been discontinued, the pattern provides yarn alternatives that offer similar weight and fiber characteristics:

  • Caron Simply Soft
  • Loops & Thread Joy DK
  • Bernat Softee Baby
  • Lion Brand Mandala Ombre

Tools Required

Crocheters will need a US H8 / 5.00 mm crochet hook or a size appropriate to achieve proper gauge with their chosen yarn.

Gauge and Sizing

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The pattern specifies 13 pattern stitches = 3.5 inches and 9 pattern rows = 3.5 inches. To ensure accuracy, crocheters should create a gauge swatch following the detailed instructions provided in the pattern, measuring rows 4 through 12 for the most reliable measurement. This intermediate-level project requires attention to gauge to ensure the wrap top fits as intended across all available sizes.
