What you'll need

Product Description

The JellyBean Baby Blanket was named after my unborn grandchild. The parents decided to wait to find out the gender and have named the little one JellyBean.

I gifted my daughter with the sample at her baby shower and she was thrilled to receive it.

This blanket is worked from the center out.

It uses approximately one Scheepjes Whirl, depending on your tension. You may want to use a smaller hook or have a Whirlette on hand if you feel that your tension is not very tight.

It was designed for easy stitching and will be an ideal project to work on while watching TV.

I hope you love it as much as I do.

JellyBean Baby Blanket by Stitchy Lass

Project Overview

The JellyBean Baby Blanket is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Debbie Scrooby of Stitchy Lass. This finished blanket measures 30 x 30 inches (76 x 76 cm), making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or small throw. The design showcases colorful, playful crochet work suitable for nurseries and baby showers.

What Is Being Made

This is a crochet baby blanket featuring a vibrant, multicolored design. The blanket combines various crochet techniques to create visual interest and texture, making it both decorative and functional for keeping a baby warm and comfortable.

Crochet Techniques Used

The JellyBean Baby Blanket employs several intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance:

  • Post stitches — Back Post double crochet (BPdc) and Back Post single crochet (BPsc) are used to create dimensional texture by working around the post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops
  • Block Stitch (BLst) — A specialty stitch that builds texture by creating a cluster effect, worked by repeating yarn overs and loops around the post of a double crochet
  • Color work — The pattern utilizes the Scheepjes Whirl yarn, which provides automatic color changes throughout the project

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches:

  • Chain (ch) — The foundation stitch used to begin rows and create spaces
  • Single crochet (sc) — A tight, dense stitch for structure and joining
  • Double crochet (dc) — A taller stitch used throughout for body and texture
  • Treble or triple crochet (tr) — A tall stitch for creating openness and drape
  • Slip stitch (sl st) — Used for joining rounds and finishing edges
  • Back Post double crochet (BPdc) — Creates raised texture by working around the post of stitches
  • Back Post single crochet (BPsc) — A shorter post stitch for varied texture
  • Block Stitch (BLst) — A decorative cluster stitch unique to this design

Materials Required

This project uses minimal materials, making it an efficient and accessible design:

  • Yarn: 1 skein of Scheepjes Whirl in the colorway Popin Candy. This is a 4-ply weight yarn, which provides a nice balance between drape and structure for a baby blanket
  • Crochet Hook: Size 0 or 3.25mm, appropriate for working with 4-ply yarn to achieve proper fabric density and stitch definition

Design Notes

The use of Scheepjes Whirl yarn is a key feature of this blanket design. This self-striping yarn automatically transitions through multiple colors as you crochet, eliminating the need for manual color changes while creating a beautiful, multicolored effect. The intermediate difficulty level reflects the use of specialty stitches like Block Stitch and post stitches, making this project suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their stitch repertoire.

Beautiful pattern, easy to follow. It's suitable for a boy or girl baby and it can also be made much larger if wanted.
