Interchangeable Picture Chart - DK Childrens Base Sweater
What Is Being Made
This is a knitted children's sweater designed by Instarsia, created as a base garment for customizable intarsia picture chart work. The sweater is available in six size options ranging from age 2-3 years through 12-13 years, with chest measurements from 61cm (24 inches) to 85cm (33½ inches). The garment features adjustable sleeve lengths and a full length that increases proportionally with size, making it suitable for growing children across multiple age ranges.
Techniques Used
This project employs intarsia knitting as its primary decorative technique, allowing crafters to incorporate picture charts into the sweater design using contrast yarn shades. The base sweater is constructed using fundamental knitting methods including flat knitting on straight needles, with shaping worked throughout the body and sleeves. Stitch holders are used to manage live stitches during construction, a standard technique for sweater assembly. The pattern accommodates customizable chart work, meaning knitters can select their own intarsia designs to personalize each garment.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stocking stitch (also known as stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that serves as the ideal canvas for intarsia picture work. Stocking stitch is formed by alternating knit and purl rows, producing a flat, even surface. This fundamental stitch is worked at a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm (4 inches), which is essential to maintain for proper garment sizing and drape.
Materials Required
The sweater is designed for DK weight yarn, with yardage estimates based on Stylecraft Special DK (295 meters per 100g ball). Main shade yarn requirements range from 2 balls for the smallest sizes (ages 2-3 and 4-5 years) to 4 balls for the largest sizes (ages 10-11 and 12-13 years). Knitters will also need oddments of contrast shades to work the intarsia picture chart details; the specific colors required depend on the chart selected.
Essential tools include:
- 1 pair of 4mm (UK size 8 / USA size 6) knitting needles for main fabric
- 1 pair of 3¼mm (UK size 10 / USA size 3) knitting needles for ribbed edgings
- 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during assembly
Pattern Format and Difficulty
This is an intermediate-level downloadable PDF pattern, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle intarsia colorwork. The pattern provides detailed measurements for six children's sizes, adjustable sleeve lengths to customize fit, and guidance on tension checking to ensure accurate sizing. The interchangeable chart system offers flexibility, allowing makers to personalize their finished sweater with chosen intarsia designs.
