Product Description

A collection of sorts, with Bristol Ivy, Alicia Plummer and Melissa Schaschwary. Four friends and four hats, all with poms!

Like many designers online, we work alone and far from our peers, but get to be a part of an amazing online social circle. So we used to to ping each other occasionally about things. Soon those pings grew into snippets of conversation and over time, those snippets have grown into a constant 4-way thread of text. It's become our virtual coffee shop, where we touch base and talk shop (or not) and have a bit of company each day. And in one of those conversations we started talking about the perfect pom hat. So this collection is that idea, translated by each of of us - with our own design perspective in mind. Hot Toddy is my contribution, featuring classic cables and simple detail. The creamy shade and rustic hand is just gorgeous in an old-school cable repeat.

Sample is in Donegal Yarns Soft Donegal. Other listed yarns are suggested substitutes.

Hot Toddy Knit Hat by BabyCocktails

What Is Being Made

Hot Toddy is a knitted pom hat designed by Thea Colman of BabyCocktails. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a cozy winter hat featuring a classic design with decorative details at the brim and crown, finished with a pompom on top. The hat is part of a four-hat collection inspired by friends gathering at a coffee shop with a cozy fireplace, each designer contributing their own unique style to the collection.

Design and Construction Details

The Hot Toddy hat showcases a rustic aesthetic with an emphasis on simplicity and wearability. The design incorporates fat cables as the primary visual element, creating texture and visual interest throughout the hat. Small detailing at the brim and crown add subtle sophistication without overwhelming the knitter with complex stitch work. The inclusion of a pompom at the crown provides both a traditional finishing touch and practical warmth.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Cable knitting for the main body of the hat
  • Ribbed or detailed brim construction
  • Crown shaping and decreases
  • Pompom attachment and finishing

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern centers on cable stitches worked in a fat gauge, creating bold textural elements. The brim and crown feature additional stitch details that provide visual interest while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The straightforward stitch work makes this an ideal project for knitters looking to practice cable techniques without excessive complexity.

Yarn and Materials

The recommended yarn is Studio Donegal Soft Donegal, a 100% merino wool in worsted weight. This yarn choice reflects the designer's appreciation for traditional Irish textile heritage, as Studio Donegal sources from Ireland. The creamy shade and rustic hand of this merino yarn enhance the cable definition and create a classic, timeless appearance. The worsted weight classification makes this yarn suitable for creating a warm, durable winter hat with good stitch definition for cable work.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, Hot Toddy is designed for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with cables and basic hat construction. The pattern balances simplicity in overall design with the technical skill of cable knitting, making it an excellent project for developing cable expertise.
