Product Description
This is a pattern for a lined pair of mittens worked from the bottom up and in the round, using the stranded colourwork technique. Stitches are provisionally cast on, before working Tvinnarand braid/plait, the wrist, and then mitten chart. Then you will rejoin lining yarn and work lining in stockinette following your mitten and chart.
There are charts for Left and Right mittens. Size is determined by the needle size; please see images for data page and more information about this pattern. If you work the lining the inner circumference will be decreased by approximately 0.25in/0.5cm.

What Is Being Made
Hoot Mittens is a downloadable knit pattern for a pair of mittens designed by Mona Zillah of bunnymuff. This intermediate-level project creates warm, wearable mittens with thematic detailing. The pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different hand measurements.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project suitable for knitters with intermediate skill level. The mittens are constructed using traditional knitting methods and techniques that require familiarity with fundamental stitches and shaping methods. The pattern involves color work and decorative elements that add visual interest to the finished mittens.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Hoot Mittens pattern employs several essential knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit stitch (k) - The foundational stitch used throughout the mittens
- Knit two together (k2tog) - A decrease stitch used for shaping
- Slip, slip, knit (cdd) - A centered double decrease created by slipping two stitches knitwise as if to knit together, knitting one stitch, then passing the slipped stitches over the knit stitch for a centered reduction
- Make one stitch (m1) - An increase technique performed by lifting the bar between two stitches, twisting the bar, and knitting through the back loop to create a new stitch
- Provisional cast-on - Used with waste yarn for specific sections of the pattern
