What Is Being Made

The Hexapuff Lap Quilt is a crochet blanket and throw project inspired by "The Beekeeper's Quilt" created by Stephanie Dosen. This quilt is constructed from multiple honeycomb-shaped pockets that are tied together to form a cohesive lap-sized blanket. Each individual hexagon unit, called a hexapuff, is stuffed to create dimension and texture, resulting in a three-dimensional puffed surface that distinguishes it from traditional flat quilts.

Construction Technique

The hexapuffs are created using a distinctive two-motif construction method. Two separate crochet motifs are crocheted in the round, then slip-stitched together to form the hexagonal shape. Once the two motifs are joined, the resulting pocket is stuffed with polyester or wool filling to create the signature puffed effect. Unlike the knitted version of this design, the crochet hexapuffs are less smushy while remaining soft and maintaining excellent structural integrity and durability.

A notable characteristic of the crochet adaptation is how the yarn colors behave during construction. Because the hexapuffs are worked in the round, the sock yarn colors travel around each motif rather than creating horizontal stripes as they would in the knitted original. This creates a kaleidoscopic effect with each hexapuff displaying unique color patterns.

One skein of either yarn produces six individual hexapuffs, allowing for flexible yarn selection and color combinations. A size B crochet hook or the appropriate size to obtain gauge is required for this project.

Additional materials include polyester or wool stuffing to fill each hexapuff and create the dimensional puffed effect that characterizes the finished quilt.
