What is Being Made

Gwendolyn is a triangular shawl knitted in four separate triangular sections. The design features a wider overall shape compared to standard triangular shawls, engineered to sit securely on the shoulders without slipping or dropping off during wear. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished garment suitable for layering and everyday wear.

Construction Technique

The shawl is constructed using a four-triangle modular knitting approach. Rather than working from a single center point or using traditional top-down construction, this method divides the shawl into four distinct triangular pieces that are knitted separately and then assembled. The narrower-than-usual triangle proportions contribute to the wider finished silhouette, which enhances the garment's stability and wearability on the shoulders.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

Gwendolyn employs several decrease stitches to shape the triangular sections and create the lace pattern characteristic of shawls made from delicate yarns:

• ssk (slip, slip, knit): Slip 2 stitches separately knitwise, return them to the left needle, and knit them together through the back loop
• k2tog (knit 2 together): A standard right-leaning decrease
• knit3tog (knit 3 together): A double decrease combining three stitches into one
• sssk (slip, slip, slip, knit): Slip 3 stitches separately knitwise, return them to the left needle, and knit them together through the back loop for a centered double decrease
