Greenport Tank – Slipover Knitting Pattern for Women in Tahki Yarns Hatteras

The Greenport Tank is an easy-level women's slipover knitting pattern designed by Teresa Chorzepa for Tahki Yarns. This relaxed, sleeveless pullover is worked in a beautifully textured Reverse Stockinette stitch, giving the finished garment a distinctive purl-side-out surface that adds visual interest while remaining approachable for beginner and early-intermediate knitters. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is knitted using Tahki Yarns Hatteras, a 100% organic cotton yarn in a chunky weight.

What Is Being Made

The Greenport Tank is a women's sleeveless slipover vest with a simple, clean silhouette. It features shaped armholes and a structured neckline, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for warm-weather wear or transitional seasons. The design is offered in four sizes — Small, Medium, Large, and XL — with finished bust measurements of 36 (40, 44, 49) inches / 91.5 (101.5, 112, 124.5) cm. The pattern is designed to be worn with 2–4 inches of positive ease, meaning the finished garment is intentionally larger than the wearer's actual bust measurement for a comfortable, relaxed fit. Finished lengths range from 21½ to 23¾ inches / 54.5 to 60.5 cm depending on size.

Construction and Techniques

The Greenport Tank is constructed using a combination of flat knitting and knitting in the round. The back and front panels are worked flat and are described as worked alike, simplifying the construction process considerably — an ideal feature for beginner knitters who prefer straightforward, repetitive instructions. A short section of circular needle work is also incorporated, specifically for finishing a cowl or neckline detail using a 16-inch / 40 cm circular needle.

The body panels begin with a few rows of Stockinette stitch at the cast-on edge before transitioning into the main fabric of Reverse Stockinette stitch, which is simply Stockinette worked with the purl side facing outward. This technique creates a softly bumpy, tactile texture that is both modern and easy to execute. Armhole shaping is achieved through a combination of bind-offs and decrease rows, giving the tank its fitted upper body.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): Knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side — used for the cast-on border rows.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev St st): Purl on the right side, knit on the wrong side — the primary stitch pattern used throughout the body of the tank.
  • K2tog (Knit 2 Together): A right-leaning decrease worked by knitting two stitches together through the front loops.
  • Ssk (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease worked by slipping two stitches knitwise and knitting them together through the back loops.
  • Ssp (Slip, Slip, Purl): The purl-side equivalent of ssk, used for decreases on wrong-side rows.
  • M1L / Make 1 Left (M1): An increase stitch worked by lifting the strand between needles onto the left-hand needle from front to back and knitting through the back loop to prevent a hole.
  • Slip 1 (Sl 1): A selvedge technique used at the beginning of rows to create a neat, even edge along the armhole and neckline shaping sections.
