Gestrickter Damenponcho in Novita Isoveli – NFFP017

This free, downloadable PDF knitting pattern by designer Lea Petäjä for Novita guides knitters through the construction of a stylish, one-size women's poncho worked in the chunky yarn Novita Isoveli. The finished poncho measures 57 cm in total length plus fringe, making it a generously sized, cosy outer layer suitable for cooler seasons. Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, it is an excellent choice for knitters who are comfortable working in the round and following a combination of written instructions and a knitting chart.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a classic women's poncho in a one-size-fits-all format. The design features a roll collar (Rollkragen) at the neckline and decorative fringe along the hem. The silhouette is shaped through strategic increases at the front and back centre, creating a graceful drape over the shoulders and body. The finished piece is both practical and elegant, combining textural stitch patterns with the visual warmth of a chunky-weight yarn.

Construction Method

The poncho is worked top-down in the round, beginning at the neckline and expanding outward toward the hem. This seamless construction method means there is minimal finishing required and the shaping is built directly into the knitting as you go. Once the main body is complete, the roll collar is picked up and worked upward from the neckline on a shorter circular needle, giving the collar its characteristic outward roll. Fringe is added to the lower edge as a final decorative detail.

Techniques Used

  • Knitting in the round – the entire poncho body and collar are worked circularly, eliminating the need for seaming
  • Top-down construction – beginning at the cast-on neckline edge and working downward to the hem
  • Yarnover increases (Umschläge) – used in every other round at the front and back centre points to shape the poncho and create a gentle, symmetrical flare
  • Following a knitting chart (Strickschrift) – a textural stitch pattern is introduced after the initial increase rounds and worked from chart rows 7 through 90
  • Changing circular needle lengths – knitters switch from shorter to longer circular needles as the stitch count grows during shaping
  • Adding fringe – decorative fringe is attached to the finished hem edge

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch in the round (Grundmuster – glatt rechts) – the base fabric of the poncho, created by knitting all stitches on every round
  • 2×2 Rib stitch (Rippenmuster – 2 M rechts, 2 M links) – used as a structural or edging element within the pattern
  • Textural stitch pattern (Strukturmuster) – a charted pattern worked over a 2-stitch repeat, introduced from round 7 of the knitting chart and continued through round 90, adding surface interest and visual depth to the body of the poncho
  • Yarnover (Umschlag) – a simple increase stitch placed at the front and back centre on every alternate round throughout the body

Materials

The poncho is knitted in Novita Isoveli in shade 043 Feldstein (Fieldstone), a warm, neutral grey tone. A total of 650 g of this chunky-weight yarn is required. Novita Isoveli is a chunky yarn well suited to large-scale knitting projects, offering excellent stitch definition and a satisfying speed of progress on the needles.

The pattern calls for circular knitting needles in size 6–7 mm, in both 60 cm and 80 cm cable lengths for the main body, and a 60 cm or 40 cm size 6 mm circular needle for the roll collar. The gauge (Maschenprobe) is 13 stitches = 10 cm in stockinette stitch, which should be
