Product Description
This is a fun crochet project that works up surprisingly fast!!! This Möbius cowl is worked from the center outward in a continuous, figure 8 loop. Also, the pattern is a 4 row repeat, so although it is easy to memorize there's lots going on to keep you interested. It is such an addictive pattern that the hardest part will be to make just one!
This crochet pattern calls for 1¾ skeins of Cascade Yarns® Eco Duo [100 g (3.5 oz)/180 meters (197 yds) per skein], which is a aran weight (4). This well written pattern includes tons of illustrations to help you to successfully complete your project.
The crochet instructions are written for one size only, but a multiple has been included making it easy for you to adjust the size, or to experiment with different weight yarns. The finished cowl measures approximately 33 cm (13”) in width and 33 cm (13”) in length.
I should warn you, your friends and family are all going to want you to make them one!

What is Being Made
The French Twist Cowl is a crochet cowl pattern designed by knot•sew•cute. This finished piece measures approximately 33 cm (13 inches) in width and 33 cm (13 inches) in length, creating a versatile neckwear accessory. The cowl's size may vary slightly depending on gauge and yarn brand selection, making it adaptable to individual preferences and yarn choices.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The pattern uses a combination of essential stitches worked in the round or in rows to create the cowl's structure. The construction method allows for a finished piece that drapes elegantly around the neck, with the "French Twist" design element creating visual interest through stitch placement and shaping.
Stitches Used
The French Twist Cowl pattern incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch) – used for foundation and stitch construction
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and securing stitches
- Single crochet (sc) – a fundamental short stitch that creates dense, structured fabric
- Half double crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch that provides balance between drape and structure
- Yarn over (YO) – the basic technique used across all crochet stitches
Materials and Tools
The French Twist Cowl pattern calls for 1¾ skeins of Cascade Yarns® Eco Duo yarn. This yarn is composed of 70% undyed baby alpaca and 30% undyed merino wool, offering a soft, breathable fiber blend ideal for neckwear. Each skein contains 100 grams (3.5 ounces) and yields 180 meters (197 yards) of yarn. The pattern sample is shown in the colorway Almond Smoke (1712), though comparable yarn in aran or worsted weight may be substituted.
For construction, the pattern requires a 6.00 mm (J) crochet hook or the appropriate size needed to achieve the specified gauge. A yarn needle is necessary for weaving in ends and finishing the cowl.
Gauge and Yarn Weight
The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 single crochet stitches and 18 rows measuring 10 cm (4 inches) when worked with a 6.00 mm (J) crochet hook and measured on an unblocked square. This gauge is achieved using aran or worsted weight yarn, which provides the appropriate fabric density for a structured yet wearable cowl. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements of 33 cm by 33 cm.
