The For Ewe Chocolate Orange Cover is a charming knitted sheep design created by Needles & Pins that wraps around a real Chocolate Orange, transforming it into a delightful gift. This woolly sheep cover serves as both a decorative accessory and a functional wrapper, making it perfect for Christmas, Easter, birthdays, or as a heartfelt "Thank Ewe" present. The design allows crafters to create a mixed flock by varying color combinations, encouraging personalization and creative expression.
This beginner-friendly knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The primary construction method uses Garter Stitch, one of the most basic and forgiving stitches in knitting, created by knitting every row. The pattern incorporates decrease techniques to shape the sheep's body, specifically using Knit 2 Together (K2tog) decreases to gradually reduce stitch counts and form the contoured shape needed to fit snugly around the chocolate orange. These shaping decreases create the characteristic rounded form of the sheep while maintaining structural integrity.
This project requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors to achieve the characteristic sheep appearance. The pattern calls for double strands of DK yarn for the fleece section, creating a thicker, more substantial fabric suitable for the cover's structure. Specific yarn recommendations include Hayfield Bonus DK in Starling for the fleece color and Hayfield Bonus DK in Cream for the face color, though any DK yarn in comparable colors works equally well. Black yarn or thread serves as embellishment for the eyes and nose details. A tiny amount of toy stuffing or cotton wool fills the head section to add dimension and shape.
The pattern requires two pairs of knitting needles: 5mm needles for casting on and working the main fleece section with doubled yarn, and 4mm needles for subsequent sections requiring a tighter gauge. These needle sizes are appropriate for DK weight yarn and allow the crafter to adjust fabric density as needed throughout the project.
Rated as a beginner project, the For Ewe Chocolate Orange Cover is accessible to knitters new to the craft. The straightforward combination of Garter Stitch and basic decreases makes it an ideal first project for practicing fundamental techniques while creating a practical, gift-worthy item. The simple color work and minimal shaping requirements ensure success for novice knitters.

Fantastic I love these patterns
Easy download of the chocolate orange cover patterns. Plan to use up the scraps of wool in my stash and make a few in time for easter.
Brilliant Easter present for family and friends. Able to use up oddments of my wool stash so all sheep had their own character. Had to make the face 2 rows longer to make it more sheep like at snout. 5 rows instead of 3. But really pleased with results.
