The Easy Infant Sweater is a beginner-friendly knitted cardigan designed for newborns through 9 months old. This project features two size options: a newborn to 3-month size with a 17" chest measurement, and a 4-month to 9-month size with a 19" chest measurement. The cardigan can be completed in approximately 2 days, making it an ideal quick project for building a colorful infant wardrobe.
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The sweater construction begins at the neckline and works downward, utilizing strategic increases to shape the body. The pattern incorporates ribbing for the neckline cuff, which provides elasticity and a finished appearance. Garter stitch is used for textured sections, while stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric for the main body. The design also incorporates garter stitch borders on the front edges to frame the cardigan opening and provide structure.
This infant sweater requires minimal yardage, using just one 1 3/4 ounce ball of baby yarn in a 4-ply weight. Two sizes of knitting needles are needed: US #4 needles and US #10 needles.
The gauge differs between needle sizes. On US #4 needles, the gauge is 11 stitches and 7 rows per inch. On the larger US #10 needles, the gauge shifts to 7 stitches and 12 rows per inch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the finished sweater to fit correctly at the specified chest measurements.
The sweater begins with casting on 67 stitches for the newborn size (79 stitches for the larger size) using US #4 needles. After working the ribbed neckline, the pattern transitions to garter stitch with evenly distributed increases worked over 6-row repeats until the piece reaches the desired width. The construction then shifts to US #10 needles, where the body continues in stockinette stitch with garter stitch borders maintained at the edges. The pattern divides for the fronts, back, and sleeves at approximately 5 inches from the beginning for the newborn size (6 inches for the larger size).
