This hat is easy and quick. The pattern is easy to understand and includes sizes to fit child through adult man. The pattern is a garter rib type stitch, so every other round is straight knit! Easy peasy!
I chose Cascade Yarns "Cherub Aran" (which is really a worsted weight, so if you substitute, use an worsted weight) and size US 8/5mm 16"/40cm circular knitting needles and the same size in double pointed knitting needles. The yarn I used is washable and good for charity projects. It's also inexpensive.

What Is Being Made

The pattern shown features color 17 in the Extra Large size.
Essential needles include a 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle in size US 8/5mm and a set of four size US 8/5mm double-pointed needles. Additional notions include one locking stitch marker for marking rounds when using double-pointed needles, eleven ring stitch markers (with one contrasting marker to denote the beginning of rounds when using circular needles), and a yarn needle or large embroidery needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Specifications
The pattern specifies a gauge of 5 stitches and 6 rounds per 1 inch (2.5 cm) measured over stockinette stitch using circular gauge, measured before blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished hat dimensions across all four sizes.
