DMC Santa Hat Punch Needle Pattern (PAT1982_2) – Free Downloadable PDF

This free downloadable PDF pattern from the DMC Library guides crafters through creating a charming Santa Hat (Chapeau de Père Noël) using the increasingly popular art of punch needle embroidery. Designed with beginners in mind, this festive project is a wonderful introduction to 3D embroidery techniques, producing a tactile, looped textile design perfect for holiday décor, ornaments, or seasonal gifts.

About the Santa Hat Design

The finished design measures approximately 17 cm x 17 cm, making it a compact and manageable project that can be completed relatively quickly — ideal for those new to punch needle work or looking for a satisfying seasonal make. The design depicts the iconic red and white Santa hat, rendered in rich wool loops that give the finished piece a cosy, dimensional texture.

Craft Technique: Punch Needle Embroidery

Punch needle is a form of 3D embroidery (referred to in the pattern as broderie 3D) that uses a hollow, needle-like tool to push loops of thread or yarn through a fabric base from the reverse side. The result is a raised, velvety surface of loops on the front of the fabric. This technique is sometimes compared to rug hooking but works on a finer scale and is well-suited to pictorial and decorative designs.

The pattern uses two distinct stitch types, each worked on a different side of the fabric:

  • Smooth stitch (Lisse) – worked on the front of the fabric, this technique creates a flat, smooth surface finish, ideal for defined outlines or areas requiring a neater appearance.
  • Loop stitch (Boucle) – worked on the reverse of the fabric, this is the classic punch needle stitch that produces raised, textured loops on the front, giving the design its characteristic fluffy, dimensional quality.

These two stitch methods are coded in the pattern using the letters A and B, allowing crafters to follow the technical chart clearly and switch between techniques as required by each section of the design.

Materials Required

The pattern calls for a specific and carefully curated set of DMC materials, ensuring colour accuracy and consistent results:

  • Tool: DMC Punch Needle, Size 10 – the recommended tool size for this project, sized appropriately for use with tapestry wool on 11-count Aida.
  • Fabric: Aida 11 ct (11-count Aida cloth) – a sturdy, evenly woven fabric with a clear grid structure that makes it easy to place punch needle stitches consistently. The 11-count weight pairs well with the tapestry wool specified.
  • Thread/Yarn: DMC Tapestry Wool (DMC Laine Colbert) – a high-quality, single-ply tapestry wool used at 1 strand throughout the design. Three colours are used:
  • DMC Tapestry Wool 704 – used in the design (2 skeins), providing a vibrant green accent.
  • DMC Tapestry Wool Blanc (White) – used for the classic white trim of the Santa hat (2 skeins).
  • DMC Tapestry Wool 7194 – the primary colour used across the largest areas of the design (4 skeins), delivering the rich red tones of the hat itself.

Skein quantities listed are calculated specifically for the 17 cm x 17 cm design size, giving crafters a reliable shopping guide before starting the project.
