Product Description
Designed and made to match the baby orange dinosaur toy (see my other patterns) for my little boy's next birthday, this pattern provides instructions to make a dinosaur beanie - in sizes from newborn to adult (please note: sizes are only a guide; individual head size may vary). For yardage, keep in mind that one large adult beanie uses less than one 100 g skein of each colour.
The only additional material required is a darning needle, with which to weave in the ends.
(If you have quite a tight crochet tension, I would suggest using a hook that is .5 mm larger, in order to obtain a similar gauge.)
Dinosaur Beanie by Crafty Creations
What Is Being Made
The Dinosaur Beanie is a colorful crocheted hat designed by Kirstin Campbell-Harris of Crafty Creations. This playful beanie features a dinosaur-themed design worked in multiple vibrant colors, making it an engaging project for crafters of all skill levels. The pattern is available in six size options, ranging from newborn (0-2 months) through adult large, ensuring a perfect fit for babies, toddlers, children, and adults.
Techniques and Construction
This crochet beanie is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern employs the magic ring method to begin the crown of the hat, which creates a neat, closed center. The hat is worked in the round, building height through successive rows of stitches. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases to expand the hat width, and decreases are incorporated to create a fitted finish. The multi-color design allows for creative color work, with different yarn colors introduced to form the dinosaur motif and details.
Stitches Used
The Dinosaur Beanie utilizes essential crochet stitches that make it accessible for beginners:
- Magic Ring (MR): Used to start the crown with a closed center
- Chain Stitch (ch): Foundation and transition stitch throughout
- Single Crochet (sc): Primary stitch for building fabric density
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Used for varied texture and stitch height
- Double Crochet (dc): Creates taller stitches for faster fabric growth
- Single Crochet 2 Together (1sc2tog): Decrease technique for shaping
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and finish edges
Materials and Specifications
This project uses DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that works up quickly while maintaining good stitch definition. The original design calls for three colors of Charity Double Knit Pullskein yarn: Sunset (orange), Tiger Lime (green), and Bright Yellow. A size G (4.00 mm) crochet hook is paired with the DK yarn, and a darning needle is needed for weaving in ends and assembling color elements.
Yardage Requirements by Size:
- Newborn (0-2 months): approximately 80-90 meters
- Baby (2-6 months): approximately 90-100 meters
- Toddler (6-18 months): approximately 100-110 meters
- Child (18+ months): approximately 110-125 meters
- Adult Small/Medium: approximately 125-140 meters
- Adult Large: approximately 140-150 meters
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Dinosaur Beanie is perfect for crocheters new to the craft or those looking for a quick, confidence-building pattern. The straightforward stitch combinations and clear abbreviations using US terminology make it easy to follow, while the magic ring start and basic shaping techniques introduce fundamental skills in an approachable way.
