CMB Beanie by April Bennett
What is Being Made
The CMB Beanie is a classic knitted hat designed to fit most head sizes. This pattern produces a cozy, finished beanie suitable for everyday wear. The design is efficient with materials, as 7 ounces of worsted weight yarn will create two complete beanies, making it an economical project for crafters looking to produce multiple garments.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is a knitting project appropriate for crafters with intermediate skill level. The pattern requires knowledge of basic to intermediate knitting stitches and the ability to follow knitting instructions accurately. The beanie is constructed using circular knitting techniques, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for hat construction.
Stitches and Construction Methods
While the pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches at the intermediate level, it utilizes a provisional cast-on technique using scrap yarn and crochet methods. This approach allows for a professional finish and is a hallmark of more refined hat construction. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles, a technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous fabric. The finished beanie is topped with a pom pom, adding a decorative and playful element to the completed hat.
Materials and Tools Required
- Needles: US 8 (5.00mm) 16-inch circular needle and US 8 (5.00mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the crown decreases
- Yarn: 7 ounces of worsted weight yarn (sufficient for two beanies)
- Additional Materials: Scrap yarn for the crocheted provisional cast-on, scissors, yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a pom pom for finishing
Yarn Weight and Gauge
This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight option that knits up quickly while providing adequate warmth and structure for a beanie. The pattern notes that no gauge is required, making it accessible for crafters who prefer to skip gauge swatching or who are working with yarn substitutions within the worsted weight category.
Pattern Details
The CMB Beanie is a one-size-fits-most design, eliminating the need to choose between multiple sizing options. This universal fit approach makes the pattern straightforward for both first-time hat makers and experienced knitters. The intermediate difficulty level ensures that crafters have developed sufficient skills to manage the techniques involved while still presenting an engaging and rewarding project.
