Easy enough pattern for an experienced knitter which I am, but I would like to have seen more front of coat pics for the finished Rudolph coat as it's different to the other dog coats having no straps or belts quite a different 'make up'. Would point out to anyone doing the larger size 6 that there is a minor typo error in the 'Neck instructions - rib across 86 sts of back should read 'rib across 96sts of back'

Product Description
Christmas Dog Coats Knitting Pattern – King Cole DK 4115
This downloadable PDF knitting pattern from King Cole presents a collection of Christmas-themed dog coats, designed to fit a wide range of dog sizes from 32 cm to 84 cm (12¾ in to 33 in). Rated as an advanced knitting project, this pattern is ideal for experienced knitters looking to create a festive, hand-crafted garment for their pet. The generous size range means the pattern can be adapted for small breeds right through to larger dogs, making it a versatile and practical choice for pet owners who love to celebrate the holiday season in style.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces knitted dog coats with a Christmas theme, worked in King Cole DK (double knit) weight yarn. These are wearable pet garments designed to fit snugly around a dog's body, providing both warmth and a decorative festive appearance. The coats are sized by chest measurement, spanning 32 cm to 84 cm, covering a broad spectrum of dog breeds and body shapes.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is specifically designed to be knitted in King Cole DK yarn, a double knit weight yarn that offers a balance of warmth, stitch definition, and ease of care. DK weight yarn is one of the most popular yarn weights in knitting, sitting between 4-ply and Aran in terms of thickness, and it works up relatively quickly while still producing a fabric with good detail and structure — ideal for a garment with decorative stitch patterns.
- Yarn: King Cole DK (double knit weight)
- Needles: 4mm knitting needles are specified for achieving the correct tension throughout the pattern
As with all knitting patterns, knitters are strongly encouraged to knit a tension square before commencing the garment, as achieving the correct tension is essential for the coat to fit the intended dog size accurately.
Tension
The pattern specifies two separate tension measurements, reflecting the use of more than one stitch pattern within the design:
- Stocking stitch tension: 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 in) over stocking stitch on 4mm needles
- Chevron pattern tension: 23 stitches and 32 rows to 10 cm (4 in) over the chevron pattern on 4mm needles
The fact that two distinct tensions are given highlights that the coat incorporates both stocking stitch sections and a decorative chevron pattern, each of which produces a slightly different fabric density. Checking tension against both measurements is important to ensure the finished garment achieves the correct dimensions across all sections.
Stitches and Techniques Used
This is an advanced level knitting pattern, meaning it draws on a range of knitting techniques beyond basic knit and purl. The following stitches and methods are referenced within the pattern:
- Stocking stitch (st-st): The classic knitting fabric formed by knitting on right side rows and purling on wrong side rows, producing a smooth, flat surface. Used as a primary fabric in sections of the coat.
- Garter stitch (g-st): Formed by knitting every row, creating a ridged, reversible fabric with good elasticity. Often used for borders, edges, or structural sections in garments.
- Chevron pattern: A decorative stitch pattern that creates a distinctive zigzag or wave effect across the fabric. Chevron patterns typically involve a combination of increases and decreases worked at regular intervals to produce the angled lines. This adds a visually interesting, festive texture to the coat.
- Increasing: The pattern uses kfb (knit front and back), a simple increase worked by knitting into the front and then the back of the same stitch to add one stitch, as well as general inc (increase) instructions.
- Decreasing: Two decrease methods are referenced — skpo (slip 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, pass slipped stitch over), which creates a left-leaning decrease, and tog (together) decreases, commonly used as kn
