What is Being Made

Cathedral Grove is a generously sized reversible wrap designed by Laura Chau, worked flat lengthwise to create a finished piece measuring 80 inches (203 cm) wide and 24.5 inches (62 cm) deep. This wrap is suitable for intermediate knitters and offers the unique advantage of being reversible, with no designated right or wrong side, making it versatile for styling and wear.

Construction and Techniques

The wrap is constructed by working flat lengthwise using a slipped stitch selvedge, which creates neat, finished edges along the sides. The reversible nature of this design is achieved through the strategic use of the Cane Stitch pattern, which naturally flips between right side and wrong side as you progress through the rows. This technique eliminates the need to identify a specific right or wrong side in the pattern repeat itself, though the directions do indicate which side is which for reference during the knitting process.

The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Cane Stitch after blocking. The pattern is shown worked in The Fibre Co. Road to China Light, a luxurious blend of 65% baby alpaca, 15% silk, 10% camel, and 10% cashmere, which provides softness and drape ideal for a wrap of this size and construction.
