Product Description
The release date of this pattern marks a special event in my life: January 2nd, 2015 is my one year anniversary from when I first started to learn how to knit! Compare this shawl to my first pattern, the Honey Comb Cowl (which was published five months into my knitting journey) to see how far I’ve come. I’m so excited to see what 2015 will bring and what I’ll learn.
Please note that the gauge is not important to this project but different gauges will affect how much yarn you will use and the final dimensions will vary slightly.
This is an asymmetrical triangular shawl knit from tip to end. The pattern alternatives between a slip-stitch and eyelet section, separated by stockinette stitch. The increases and decreases work together to create a bias in the fabric. The result is a lovely and elegant shawl that drapes beautifully. Knit this up in Woolfolk yarn to experience a shawl like no other.

Caprius Shawl by Francoise Danoy
What Is Being Made
The Caprius Shawl is an asymmetrical triangular shawl designed by Francoise Danoy. This downloadable knitting pattern creates an elegant, draping accessory that measures 82 inches by 42 inches by 14 inches. The shawl is knit from tip to end, allowing for a unique construction method that builds the garment progressively from a single point.
Construction and Design Techniques
This intermediate-level knitting project employs a sophisticated combination of techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The pattern alternates between slip-stitch sections and eyelet sections, with stockinette stitch serving as the separator between these contrasting textural elements. The strategic placement of increases and decreases works together to create a deliberate bias in the fabric, which contributes to the shawl's beautiful drape and elegant appearance. The tip-to-end construction method allows knitters to control the final dimensions as they work, making this an engaging and interactive knitting experience.
Stitches Used
The Caprius Shawl incorporates a variety of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches:
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation of the stockinette stitch sections
- Yarn over (yo) creates the eyelet details that add visual interest and openness to the design
- Knit front and back (kfb) and purl front and back (pfb) serve as increase stitches to expand the shawl's dimensions
- Knit two together (k2tog) and purl two together (p2tog) function as decrease stitches
- Slip stitch with yarn in front (sl wyif) and slip stitch with yarn in back (sl) create the slip-stitch sections that add texture and definition
Materials and Specifications
This pattern calls for 3 skeins of Woolfolk TYND yarn, totaling approximately 620 yards of 4-ply weight yarn. The recommended needle size is Size 5 (3.75mm). The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches per 4 inches, though the designer notes that precise gauge is not crucial to the success of this project, making it more forgiving for knitters with varying tension.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Caprius Shawl is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working with increases, decreases, and pattern repeats. The combination of slip-stitch work, eyelets, and bias shaping provides an engaging challenge without being overwhelming for experienced beginners.
