What you'll need

Product Description

Super fun, slightly slouchy hat made with stranded colourwork technique.

The DK Knitcol contrast yarn I chose has short colour repeats (think self-striping sock yarn) so that the “buttons” change colour a couple of times a row. There are many delicious colourways of this yarn to match any background colour, some of which would be ideal for a boy version with camouflage colours or more masculine tones.

You don’t have to match the gauge of your main yarn with your contrast yarn, so you can use a thinner or thicker yarn if you have a particular yarn you want to use. This will be equally fun with a solid contrast yarn or one with less variability in colour.

Note that I’m a pretty loose knitter, so most knitters will want a larger needle than the one stated in the pattern. Suitable needles are shown below.

What is Being Made

The Candy Buttons Hat is a colorful stranded colorwork knit hat designed to brighten winter days. This downloadable knitting pattern offers a playful approach to hat construction, allowing crafters to choose between high-contrast yarn combinations that create button-like color shifts within individual rows, or more subtle effects using handyed yarns with natural color variations. The design philosophy encourages creative yarn selection, comparing the process to a child choosing sweets from a candy shop.

Sizes and Fit

The pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different head sizes and ages:

  • 18 months to 4 years: finished circumference 40cm (15¾ inches)
  • 4 years to adult small: finished circumference 50cm (19¾ inches)

The pattern recommends choosing a size that is 2-5cm (1-2 inches) smaller than your actual head size for a snug, comfortable fit.

Techniques and Skills Required

The Candy Buttons Hat is rated as an Advanced Beginner level pattern, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic skills and are ready to expand their technical abilities. The primary techniques required include:

  • Stranded colorwork knitting: The core technique of this hat, involving working with two colors within the same row to create the distinctive button pattern effects
  • Knitting in the round: Essential for constructing the seamless crown and body of the hat
  • Increasing and decreasing: Necessary for shaping the hat from the cast-on edge through the crown

Stitches Used

While the pattern details are not fully specified in the provided content, the construction relies on stranded colorwork as the primary stitch technique. This involves carrying yarn colors across the inside of the work while knitting with the active color, creating the visual button effects on the exterior of the hat. The pattern uses standard knit and purl stitches combined with the colorwork method to achieve its design.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn Weight: The Candy Buttons Hat is designed to work with DK or Aran weight yarns, providing versatility in yarn selection. The pattern's flexibility allows crafters to choose contrasting colors or handyed variations depending on their desired aesthetic outcome.

Needles and Tools:

  • 3mm (US 2.5) needles for cast-on and ribbing
  • 3.25mm (US 3) needles for the main body of the hat
  • Crochet hook in a similar size to your needles (optional, for provisional cast-on method)
  • Waste yarn (for provisional cast-on if using the crochet hook method)

Pattern Format

The Candy Buttons Hat is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, designed by independent designer Elizabeth Felgate. The pattern is written out fully for the smallest size, with stitch counts and measurements for larger sizes provided in parentheses throughout, allowing knitters to easily scale the design to their chosen size.
