Brita Hat in Schachenmayr Boston

What Is Being Made

The Brita Hat is a beginner-friendly knitted hat designed by the Schachenmayr Design Team. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat with a circumference of approximately 52–53 cm, suitable for average adult head sizes. The design features a classic construction with ribbed edging, a stockinette stitch body, and a decorative pom-pom accent at the crown.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs fundamental techniques appropriate for beginners. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, which creates a seamless construction. The pattern incorporates color work through color sequences, allowing knitters to create striped or multi-colored effects by changing yarn colors at specified rows. Shaping is achieved through decreasing stitches in the crown area using the k2tog (knit two together) decrease method, which gradually reduces stitch count to close the top of the hat. A pom-pom approximately 7 cm in diameter is created separately and sewn onto the finished hat for a decorative finish.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbed pattern – Used for the first 4 rounds to create an elastic edge that helps the hat stay securely on the head
  • Stockinette stitch – The primary stitch used for 31 rounds to form the main body of the hat, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • K2tog (knit two together) – A basic decrease stitch used in rounds 36 and 37 to shape and close the crown of the hat

Materials and Yarn

The Brita Hat pattern calls for Schachenmayr Boston, a chunky-weight yarn. Each 50 g ball contains approximately 55 meters (60 yards) of yarn. The pattern requires a total of four 50 g balls in the following colors: one ball each of neon gelb (neon yellow, color 00121), mittelgrau meliert (medium gray melange, color 00092), neon pink (color 00136), and leinen (linen, color 00005). An additional ball of neon gelb and one of leinen are specified for creating the pom-pom. Standard knitting needles appropriate for chunky yarn, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and closing the crown, and stitch markers to track the beginning of each round are required to complete this project.
