Bright and Breezy Kimono in Caron Simply Soft – Knitting Pattern Summary

The Bright and Breezy Kimono is a free, downloadable knitting pattern designed by Marlaine DesChamps and published by Caron International. This relaxed, open-front kimono-style jacket is an ideal project for beginner knitters looking to build confidence while creating a wearable, stylish garment. The airy construction and simple stitch pattern make it approachable without sacrificing visual interest.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a kimono-style jacket with a flowing, open front and a lightweight, breezy silhouette. It is worked in three sizes to accommodate a range of body types:

  • Small/Medium: 40" / 101.5 cm bust, 20" / 51 cm length
  • Large/Extra Large: 45" / 114.5 cm bust, 21" / 53.5 cm length
  • Extra-Extra Large: 50" / 127 cm bust, 22" / 56 cm length

The generous, relaxed fit and kimono-inspired shape make this jacket a versatile layering piece suitable for warmer seasons or transitional weather — perfectly in keeping with its "bright and breezy" name.

Techniques Used

The pattern is worked flat, back and forth in rows, using both straight and circular needles. The primary technique is flat knitting, meaning stitches are not joined into the round. The circular needle is used specifically to accommodate the large number of stitches required for the front band, but it is worked back and forth rather than in the round — a helpful note for beginners unfamiliar with this approach.

  • Flat knitting worked in rows throughout
  • Eyelet lace technique using yarn-overs and decreases to create an open, decorative fabric
  • Cast-on and bind-off construction with a loose cast-on recommended for the back piece
  • Seamless front band worked on a long circular needle to manage stitch count

Stitches Used

The pattern relies on two distinct stitch patterns that work together to create structure and texture:

  • Garter Stitch: Achieved by knitting every row. This classic, beginner-friendly stitch creates a firm, ridged fabric and is used for the border and edging sections of the kimono. It lies flat naturally, making it ideal for hems and bands.
  • Eyelet Pattern (worked over a multiple of 2 stitches + 1): This four-row repeating lace pattern forms the main body of the garment. It uses yarn-overs (yo), k2tog (knit two together), and ssk (slip, slip, knit) decreases to create a delicate, open mesh effect. The four rows are:
    • Row 1 (RS): K2, *yo, k2tog; repeat from * to last stitch, k1
    • Rows 2 and 4: Purl
    • Row 3: K1, *ssk, yo; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, k2

The alternating direction of the eyelets in Rows 1 and 3 creates a balanced, symmetrical lace texture across the fabric. This is an excellent introduction to lace knitting for beginners, as each row is straightforward and the four-row repeat is easy to memorize.

Materials – Yarn and Needles

The pattern is designed specifically for Caron Simply Soft yarn, a worsted-weight, 100% acrylic yarn. The colorway used in the sample is #0015 Strawberry, giving the finished kimono a vibrant, warm tone. Yardage and skein requirements are as follows:

  • Small/Medium and Large/Extra Large: 4 skeins of Caron Simply Soft (6 oz / 170 g, 315 yds / 288 m per skein)
