Brienne Accessories by Claudia Wersing – Knitted Hat, Gloves, and Collar in Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia
The Brienne Accessories pattern by designer Claudia Wersing is part of The Nordic Collection and offers three coordinating knitted accessories: a fitted hat, a pair of gloves, and a collar. Each piece is worked in Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia yarn, bringing a cohesive, cold-weather aesthetic to the set. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is rated intermediate in difficulty, making it a satisfying project for knitters who are comfortable with circular needles, double-pointed needles, and textured stitch patterns.
About the Yarn and Materials
All three accessories are knitted using Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia in colorway 102 Smoked, a rich, muted tone that suits the Nordic-inspired aesthetic of the collection. The pattern calls for 2 x 100g hanks of this DK weight yarn. Knitters will need both US 4 / 3.5mm and US 6 / 4mm circular needles (24" / 60cm long), as well as matching sets of double-pointed needles in both sizes for working smaller circumferences such as the crown of the hat and the fingers of the gloves. Eight stitch markers are also required. The pattern notes that LYKKE® needles are recommended for best results.
Gauge is set at 22 stitches and 40 rows over 4" / 10cm in Stockinette stitch using the US 6 / 4mm needles, and achieving accurate gauge is especially important when knitting accessories intended to fit specific head and hand measurements.
The Hat
The Brienne hat is worked in the round and comes in three sizes to accommodate a range of head circumferences:
- Small: fits 18" / 46cm head circumference
- Medium: fits 19½" / 50cm head circumference
- Large: fits 21¼" / 54cm head circumference
The actual slightly stretched circumference measures 19 (19¾, 21¼)" / 48 (52, 56)cm, and the finished length is 9¾" / 25cm. The hat incorporates a combination of stitch patterns that give it its Nordic character, including ribbing at the brim, Stockinette sections, and the distinctive Blackberry pattern, a classic textured stitch that creates a dense, bobble-like fabric with visual depth.
Techniques and Stitches Used in the Hat
- Rib stitch worked in the round: alternating knit 1, purl 1 for a stretchy, fitted brim
- Stockinette stitch worked in the round: knit every round for smooth, clean body sections
- Blackberry pattern worked in the round over stitches divisible by 4, creating a richly textured, three-dimensional surface
- Crown decreases using stitch markers to shape the top of the hat
- Transitioning between circular needles and double-pointed needles as the stitch count reduces toward the crown
The Blackberry pattern is a four-round repeat that alternates between purl rounds and rounds that combine k3tog decreases with (p1, k1, p1) all into one stitch increases, creating the signature bobble clusters. This technique requires attention to the stitch count and a consistent tension to keep the fabric even.
The Gloves
The Brienne gloves are worked in one size, designed to fit average-sized hands. Like the hat, they are knitted in the round using double-pointed needles, beginning with a ribbed cuff and continuing with Stockinette and textured pattern sections. The gloves incorporate the same Blackberry pattern seen in the hat, maintaining the cohesive look of the accessory set.
