Product Description

Blue Whale is the first pattern in the Summer of Sea Creatures series for 2019. Our theme this year is “The Biggest Animals in the Ocean.” Please join us on instagram by tagging your project photos #summerofseacreatures

Real blue whales are the biggest of them all, regularly growing to around 100 feet long! Our little whale comes in at just under 2 feet, but he’s the perfect size for snuggles. If you want a whale that’s going to use a little less of your polyfil stash, consider making him in a thinner weight yarn on smaller needles. To make the whale you will need knowledge of basic increases and decreases and be able to knit in the round on double pointed needles. The whale uses about two balls of MC (blue) and less than one ball of CC (white).

Blue Whale Knitting Pattern by Rachel Borello Carroll

What Is Being Made

The Blue Whale is a stuffed toy knitting pattern designed as the first project in Rachel Borello Carroll's Summer of Sea Creatures series for 2019. This pattern creates a cuddly whale plush toy that measures approximately 22 inches long when worked in the recommended super bulky weight yarn on size 11 needles. The design celebrates ocean life with a focus on the largest animals in the sea—real blue whales grow to around 100 feet in length, and this knitted version provides a perfect-sized companion for snuggles and display.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting pattern suitable for crafters with intermediate skill level. The pattern uses fundamental knitting techniques to construct a three-dimensional toy that requires stuffing. The design accommodates yarn weight flexibility, allowing knitters to adjust the finished size by selecting thinner weight yarn and smaller needles if desired to reduce polyester fiberfill usage. The pattern includes safety eye insertion for facial features, adding character and dimension to the completed whale.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern materials list, the Blue Whale employs standard knitting stitches appropriate for toy construction. The pattern is worked in pieces using double pointed needles, a common technique for creating seamless or nearly seamless toy components that are subsequently assembled and stuffed.

Materials and Yarn

  • Main Color (MC): 2 balls of Cascade Lana Grande in Blue Steel (colorway 6060), or any super bulky weight yarn
  • Contrast Color (CC): 1 ball of Cascade Lana Grande in Ecru, or any super bulky weight yarn
  • Needles: 1 set of size US 11/8mm double pointed knitting needles
  • Notions: 1 set of 15mm black acrylic safety eyes, small amount of black wool worsted weight yarn for embroidery details, polyester fiberfill stuffing, and a yarn needle for assembly

The pattern specifies Cascade Lana Grande yarn in the main and contrast colors, though any super bulky weight yarn can be substituted. The super chunky yarn weight allows for quick project completion and creates a soft, huggable finished toy. Knitters seeking a smaller whale with reduced stuffing requirements can work the pattern in thinner yarn weights on appropriately sized needles.

Very disappointment with the pattern, I didn’t feel it was easy to read and didn’t seem to be accurate in places. Wool darker than shown in picture but did like it.
