This is Big Ted the Bear. As his name implies he is a very big bear!
He stands at 26 inches/66cms and sits at 17 inches/43cms. He has large paws and feet, seems he has a bit of growing to do yet!!
I have never seen a knitting pattern for a very big bear and I was challenged by my young son to design one using a whole pack, 400 grams, of yarn. Always up for a challenge I decided to try and even I was amazed how Big Ted evolved!
He is designed with his legs and body as one piece, head, ears and arms need to be worked separately and attached. I couldn't find a safety nose big enough so there are directions for a knitted nose. He is knitted flat and assembled.
Big Ted is a gentle giant of a bear, he's very cuddly and totally huggable! Pattern includes directions for his smart waistcoat.
The directions also include a step by step assembly guide which is full of photos and hints to help you to create this gentle giant of a bear for someone special.
Big Ted the Bear is a large, stuffed knitted toy bear designed by Pat Alinejad under the Gypsycream label. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a standing bear that measures 26 inches (66 centimeters) in height when standing and 17 inches (43 centimeters) when seated. The bear features oversized paws and feet, giving it a playful, proportioned appearance suitable for children or as a decorative soft toy.
Big Ted is knitted flat rather than in the round, meaning pieces are created on straight needles and then assembled together. The construction method is notably efficient: the legs and body are knitted as a single continuous piece, which reduces the number of seams and assembly steps required. Straight seams run from the top of the inside leg to the outside hip, creating flexible leg joints that allow the bear to pose naturally and stand upright with stability.
The bear includes safety eyes measuring 22mm, which are inserted during assembly to create a realistic, child-safe face. A step-by-step assembly guide is included with the pattern to help crafters through the making-up process.
While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch abbreviations or detailed row-by-row instructions visible in the excerpt provided, the pattern employs standard knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The flat knitting construction requires basic increases and decreases to shape the bear's body, limbs, and head. The pattern uses a combination of yarn weights to achieve different textural effects and structural integrity throughout the finished toy.
Crafters will need 3.5mm/US size 4 straight knitting needles for working with the chunky eyelash yarn and contrast yarns. A yarn sewing needle is essential for seaming the pieces together and securing the safety eyes during the assembly phase.
This pattern uses chunky-weight eyelash yarn as the primary material, which means stitches are large and work progresses quickly, making the project less time-intensive than patterns using lighter yarn weights. Despite the chunky yarn simplifying individual stitch work, the project is rated as intermediate difficulty due to the assembly requirements, shaping techniques, and the precision needed to create a well-proportioned, standing toy bear. Crafters should have experience with basic shaping, seaming, and toy assembly before attempting this design.
