Product Description

The Big Horizon Jumper is the adult version of the original kids version. It is designed to be comfortable and loose, and it dips a little longer at the back. It features rows of contrast colored bobbles across the chest and accents on the sleeve ends. There are video tutorials both on youtube and on my Instagram to show you how to work the bobble stitches, the unique sleeve stitch, and also the NO SEW neckband which you are sure to love. Links are included in the pattern.

Big Horizon Jumper by Little Golden Nook

What is Being Made

The Big Horizon Jumper is a crochet sweater designed by independent designer Little Golden Nook. This garment is available in five Australian women's sizes: Small (to fit 73-87cm bust), Medium (90-97cm), Large (99-107cm), XL (110-117cm), and XXL (120-135cm). The pattern uses a multi-color design incorporating a main color and four contrast colors to create visual interest and depth in the finished piece.

Yarn and Materials

This jumper is constructed using 10ply/Aran weight yarn, which provides structure and drape suitable for a comfortable everyday sweater. Yardage requirements vary by size:

  • Size Small: 1200 meters
  • Size Medium: 1300 meters
  • Size Large: 1400 meters
  • Size XL: 1450 meters
  • Size XXL: 1700 meters

Crocheters may also substitute DK or Aran weight yarn depending on desired fabric weight and drape. The pattern calls for four contrast colors, requiring approximately 12-15 meters of each.

Tools and Equipment

Three different crochet hook sizes are used throughout this project to achieve proper gauge and construction:

  • 5mm hook for the body of the jumper
  • 6mm hook for the sleeves
  • 4mm hook for the neckband ribbing

A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the garment.

Stitches and Techniques

The Big Horizon Jumper is an intermediate-level crochet project that employs a variety of stitches and post-stitch techniques to create texture and structure:

  • Half Double Crochet (HDC) forms the primary fabric of the body
  • Single Crochet (Sc) is used in sleeve sections and ribbing
  • Chain Space (Ch sp) creates openwork or structured gaps in the design
  • Front Post Single Crochet (FPSC) and Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC) add dimensional texture
  • Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC) and Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC) create ribbed effects, particularly in the neckband

Post stitches—which work around the post of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops—are essential to this design, providing elasticity and definition to ribbed sections and creating the visual complexity that distinguishes the Big Horizon Jumper.

Gauge and Construction Notes

Achieving proper gauge is critical for this intermediate project. The pattern specifies:

  • Body gauge (5mm hook): 11.5 rows and 13.5 half double crochets = 10cm x 10cm (7 hdcs in 5cm)
  • Sleeve gauge (6mm hook): 9 single crochets and 14 rows = 10cm x 10cm

The pattern is written in US crochet terminology and is available as a downloadable PDF. It includes detailed instructions for five distinct sizes, allowing crocheters to customize the fit to their measurements. The use of multiple hook sizes and post-stitch techniques requires intermediate-level crochet skills and familiarity with gauge swatching.
