What is Being Made

The Baileys Irish Cream is a knitted cardigan designed by BabyCocktails (Thea Colman) as a downloadable PDF pattern. This is a beginner-friendly cardigan project available in nine sizes ranging from 33" to 60" finished bust measurement (84cm to 152.5cm). The cardigan is designed to be worn closed with approximately 3 inches (7.75cm) of positive ease at the bust, making it a comfortable, relaxed-fitting garment suitable for various body types.

Techniques Used

This cardigan employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner knitters. The main body is worked in the round using long circular needles, which allows for seamless construction of the cardigan body and collar. The sleeves are worked using the knitter's preferred method for small circumferences in the round, offering flexibility in approach—whether using double-pointed needles, magic loop, or other circular techniques. The pattern incorporates lace stitch work, adding visual interest and texture to the finished garment. Button bands are included as part of the construction, with provisions for sewing on 6 to 7 buttons (approximately 0.5 inches or 1.25cm in diameter) to close the cardigan front.

The sample cardigan shown in the pattern was knitted using Shalimar Yarns Breathless DK, a luxury blend composed of 75% merino wool, 15% cashmere, and 10% silk, with a yardage of 270 yards (247 meters) per skein.

Needles required are US size 5 (3.75mm), or whatever size is needed to achieve the specified gauge. Long circular needles are recommended for working the cardigan body and collar. The pattern calls for standard notions including stitch markers, a darning needle for weaving in ends, and waste yarn or stitch holders for managing stitches during construction. A sewing needle and thread are needed to attach the buttons.

Gauge

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements and fit of the cardigan.
