Product Description
An adorable sun hat in 4 sizes for a newborn up to about 24 months in cotton yarn.
My first grandchild is due this year and we know it’s a girl! The due date is late summer so any new-born article needs to be light. This flowery sun hat drifted into my mind, on a lazy summer breeze.
This pattern works up really quickly with just a few unusual instructions to get the petal tip detail over the green leaf brim.
There are detailed instructions for 4 sizes with photos to help but also guide-lines on how to adapt it for other sizes.
The yardage given is the total yarn needed. One 50g ball of white easily makes the biggest size with modest amounts of yellow and green to complete.
Although the design is modelled on a daisy, it would look lovely in other colours to create asters, gerberas, etc.
Baby Daisy Sun Hat by Granny Lawlor
What is Being Made
The Baby Daisy Sun Hat is a lightweight crochet sun hat designed specifically for newborns and infants up to 2 years old. This flowery-inspired design features a lacy construction that keeps babies cool during warm weather months. The pattern includes four different sizes to accommodate growing babies, with the newborn size featuring a head circumference of approximately 22cm, and larger sizes extending up to 2 years of age. The hat is modeled on a daisy flower design but can be customized in various colorways to resemble other flowers such as asters or gerberas.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs lacy stitch techniques that create an open, breathable fabric ideal for summer wear. The design incorporates floral shaping methods to construct the daisy petal structure of the hat. The lacy construction allows air circulation while maintaining the hat's form and decorative flower appearance. The pattern demonstrates how to work in the round to create a fitted hat crown, with techniques for increasing stitches to shape the hat properly across multiple sizes.
Stitches and Construction Details
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the lacy design indicates the use of open stitch patterns typical of summer crochet hats. The construction method involves working from the crown downward or in rounds to create the fitted newborn and infant sizes. The floral design elements suggest the use of petal shaping techniques and decorative stitch work that creates the daisy flower appearance characteristic of the hat's design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Baby Daisy Sun Hat is worked in DK weight yarn, which provides an appropriately lightweight fabric for newborns and young babies. DK yarn creates a delicate, breathable fabric that is essential for summer sun hats designed to keep babies cool without overheating. A standard crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn is required to complete this project. The light yarn weight ensures the finished hat remains comfortable for babies during warm weather months.
Size Range and Fit Considerations
The pattern provides four graduated sizes accommodating babies from newborn through 2 years of age. Granny Lawlor emphasizes the importance of checking the baby's head circumference before beginning to ensure a proper fit. The original design concept produced a very small preemie size with a 22cm circumference, but the final pattern was expanded to include newborn and larger sizes suitable for growing infants. This thoughtful sizing approach ensures the hat will fit correctly and comfortably across the intended age range.
Design Inspiration and Customization
Created as a gift for the designer's first grandchild due in late summer, the Baby Daisy Sun Hat draws inspiration from daisy flowers and features a flowery aesthetic. The lacy design provides visual appeal while maintaining breathability for warm weather wear. The pattern encourages customization through color selection, allowing crafters to create variations resembling different flowers such as asters or gerberas. However, the designer notes that while the lacy construction keeps the hat cool, it does not provide total sun protection and should be used as part of a comprehensive sun safety approach for babies.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic stitches. The intermediate skill level reflects the lacy stitch work, shaping techniques, and the need to work across multiple sizes accurately. Crafters should be comfortable with reading crochet patterns and executing increases and decreases to shape the hat properly.
