Design Overview

This intermediate-level knitting project features a sophisticated color pairing that showcases the contrast between dark forest floor shadows and the vibrant seasonal colors of the tree canopy.

What Is Being Made

This project creates an adult-sized cowl with dimensions of 42 inches (106 cm) in circumference and 8 inches (20 cm) in width after blocking. The cowl is worn as a long, tubular neckpiece that combines two coordinating yarn colors to achieve a distinctive overlapping gradient effect reminiscent of a forest landscape.

Construction Method

The cowl is worked in the round as a long tube, with the two ends eventually joined together to form the finished cowl. This construction technique creates a seamless, continuous fabric that drapes elegantly around the neck.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The primary stitch technique used in this project is linen stitch, a textured stitch pattern that knits the two colors together to create the overlapping gradient effect. Yarn and Materials

This project requires two skeins of sport weight yarn. The sample was created using Knitted Wit Sport Weight yarn in two colorways: Bing Cherry (Main Color) and Autumn Rainbow (Contrast Color). Each skein contains 100% Superwash Merino fiber with yardage of 380 yards (347 meters) per 4 ounces (113 grams). The pattern notes that any smooth, multi-plied sport weight yarn may be substituted, provided it meets the fiber and yardage requirements. Sport weight yarn is a lightweight option that creates a fabric with excellent drape and breathability, making it ideal for a cowl that will be worn close to the face and neck.
