Pattern 977 Kingfisher: A Cabled Wrap-Front Coatigan Knitting Pattern for Women by Julie Turjoman

The Valley Yarns pattern #977 Kingfisher, designed by Julie Turjoman, is a women's wrap-front cardigan — often described as a coatigan — that combines relaxed, cozy styling with elegant cable detailing. This downloadable PDF knitting pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty and is worked in the luxurious Valley Yarns Becket, a 50% Superfine Alpaca / 50% Wool blend that gives the finished garment a plush, warm drape ideal for cool spring days or blustery weather. Whether you are an experienced knitter looking for a satisfying project or an intermediate knitter ready to expand your skills, the Kingfisher coatigan offers a beautifully wearable result with classic, timeless appeal.

What Is Being Made

The Kingfisher is a wrap-front women's cardigan featuring a generous overlap at the front, a plush shawl collar, and a dramatic cabled front panel set against an easy reverse stockinette background. The overall silhouette is relaxed and enveloping — true to the coatigan style — making it a versatile layering piece. The shawl collar adds a cozy, elevated touch, while the cable detailing on the front panels gives the garment visual interest and texture without overwhelming the knitter with complex all-over patterning. The reverse stockinette background creates a soft, purl-side fabric that contrasts beautifully with the raised cable stitches, adding depth and dimension to the finished piece.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

The Kingfisher pattern is offered in a generous range of eight sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, and 4XL. The sample garment shown in the pattern is knitted in Size S. The pattern is designed with a generous front overlap, meaning the finished bust measurements are intentionally larger than the wearer's actual bust to allow for the wrap style.

  • Finished Bust: 44 (48½, 52, 58¾, 63½) (68, 71½, 76) inches
  • Intended to fit bust size: 30–34 (34–38, 38–42, 42–46, 46–50) (50–54, 54–58, 58–62) inches

The generous ease built into the design is intentional, giving the coatigan its characteristic relaxed, draped silhouette and ensuring the wrap front lies smoothly across the body.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting construction techniques that intermediate knitters will find both familiar and rewarding to practice:

  • Bottom-up construction: The garment is worked from the lower edge upward, a traditional approach that allows knitters to try on the piece as they go and make length adjustments with ease.
  • Worked flat: The pieces are knitted flat, back and forth in rows rather than in the round, producing separate panels that are later assembled.
  • Seamed construction: The flat-knitted pieces are joined using seaming techniques, which contribute to the garment's structure and help the finished coatigan hold its shape over time. Seamed garments often have a more tailored, polished appearance compared to seamless construction.
  • Cables: Cable knitting is used prominently on the front panels of the Kingfisher. Cables are created by temporarily placing stitches on a cable needle, then crossing them over or under adjacent stitches before knitting them off. This crossing technique creates the characteristic twisted, rope-like or braided patterns that give cables their three-dimensional texture. A cable needle is listed as a required material for this pattern.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch patterns featured in the Kingfisher coatigan include:

  • Reverse stockinette stitch: This is the main background fabric of the garment. Reverse stockinette is simply standard stockinette stitch viewed from the purl side, giving a bumpy, textured surface rather than the smooth "V" appearance of the knit side. It creates a soft, cozy fabric that serves as an excellent backdrop for the raised cable panels.
  • Cable stitches: Used on the front panels to create the signature decorative detailing
