Stitching the night sky

Star charts are a good genre for cross stitch because the subject is made of small bright points on a dark ground, which is exactly what a cross stitch is. The designs in this collection run from simple five-point stars and crescent moons to solar systems, rockets, star maps and constellations joined with backstitch lines. Some are single motifs meant to be finished in an evening; others are full samplers with a stitched border, alphabet and date, made to be framed and given. Because the palette is usually small – a dark ground, two or three metallic or pale golds, and a handful of blues – these are cheap projects to stock up for and forgiving of thread substitutions.

Fabric and thread choices

• Aida 14 count: the standard. Easy to see, easy to count, good for beginners and for larger star samplers.
• Aida 16 or 18 count: a finer, more detailed result in a smaller frame; harder on the eyes under poor light.
• Evenweave or linen: stitched over two threads, giving a softer look for constellation maps.
• Dark navy or black fabric: dramatic for night-sky designs, but use a lightbox or a white grid marker, because counting on black is genuinely difficult.
• Metallic threads: lovely for star points; use short lengths of around 30cm, because metallics fray and shred if you drag them through the fabric too many times.

Techniques these designs use

Most star charts are plain full cross stitch with backstitch outlining. The backstitch is what makes a constellation legible, so work it after all the crosses are finished and follow the chart's lines exactly rather than eyeballing them. French knots appear often as distant stars; wrap twice, keep the thread taut with your non-dominant hand while you take the needle back down, and go one wrap more only if you want a chunkier star. Half stitches and fractional stitches are used to smooth the curve of a moon or a planet's edge. Keep all your crosses running the same direction – every top leg the same way – and the finished piece will catch the light evenly, which matters more on a dark ground than anywhere else.

Framing, finishing and gifting

Wash the finished piece in lukewarm water with a little mild soap if you have handled it a lot, roll in a towel, and press face down on a folded towel so the stitches are not flattened. Star designs make good nursery pictures, Christmas decorations, birth samplers with a date, and cards. For a hoop finish, trim the fabric to about 4cm beyond the hoop, run a gathering stitch round the edge, pull it tight at the back and glue a felt circle over it. For framing, lace the fabric over acid-free board rather than using sticky board, which discolours over time and cannot be undone.
