Super chunky usually calls for a 9mm hook or larger, and chenille yarns need a smooth hook to avoid snagging. Keep your tension a little looser than usual so the fabric stays soft rather than board-stiff, and count stitches at the end of each row, as it's easy to lose one in the pile.

Is chenille yarn hard to crochet with?

It's soft but can worm if worked too loosely. A firm, even tension and a large smooth hook keeps stitches neat.
