How a crochet basket is built

Nearly every basket here follows the same architecture: a flat circular or oval base worked in increasing rounds, then a turn where you stop increasing and the sides rise straight up. Whatever you choose, go down at least one hook size from the ball band. A basket needs a dense, almost stiff fabric; a comfortable, drapey tension makes a floppy bag, not a basket. Your hands will notice, so work in shorter sessions than usual.

There are several ways to firm up a basket beyond tension alone. Working in the round in continuous spirals avoids a visible seam line. Two or three baskets in graduated sizes in the same palette look intentional in a way a single basket does not, and nesting sets are a common pattern format for exactly that reason.

Care and longevity

Cotton and t-shirt yarn baskets can be hand washed in cool water and reshaped while damp - stuff them with a towel or a balloon to hold the form as they dry, or they will dry as an oval. Do not tumble dry, which shrinks and distorts them. Jute and raffia should be brushed and spot-cleaned only.
