Tiny feet, tiny projects: knitted booties from start to finish

Booties are the project knitters keep coming back to. A pair uses maybe 40 to 60 metres of DK and costs almost nothing when you knit them from the leftovers in your basket, plus they can be finished between supper and bedtime. They're also the ideal way to learn a new technique in miniature — short-row heels, picking up stitches, i-cord ties — because if it goes wrong you've lost an evening, not a fortnight. This collection covers baby booties from newborn to toddler, plus adult slippers, bed socks and moccasin-style house shoes.

The three main constructions

1. Flat and seamed: knitted on two needles as a single shaped piece, then sewn up the sole and back of the heel. The classic garter-stitch bootee lives here, and it's the most beginner-friendly route.
2. Worked in the round: cast on at the cuff, work a short-row or heel-flap heel and finish at the toe, exactly like a miniature sock, on double-pointed needles or a small circular using magic loop.
3. Sole-up: begin with an oval sole, pick up around the edge and build the sides and cuff upwards. These give the neatest fit and no sole seam under the foot.

Sizing by sole length

Forget shoe sizes and work to sole length in centimetres. A newborn is roughly 8cm, 0–3 months about 9cm, 3–6 months 10cm and 6–12 months around 11–12cm. Toddlers climb quickly from there. If you're knitting for a baby you haven't met, go a size up: booties that are slightly too long stay on quite happily with a ribbed cuff or a tie, whereas ones that are too small never get worn at all.

Yarn, needles and notions

DK on 3.25–3.5mm needles is the workhorse of this collection — knitting slightly tighter than the ball band suggests gives a firmer fabric that holds its shape and resists little toes poking through. 4 ply on 2.75mm suits christening and heirloom designs, especially lace-edged bootees with ribbon threaded through eyelets. Superwash merino, cotton blends and soft baby acrylics are the sensible choices, since booties will be washed constantly and often lost one at a time. You'll also want a blunt darning needle, stitch markers, and possibly narrow ribbon or a few small buttons.

Keeping booties on wriggling feet

• A snug rib or garter cuff above the ankle beats a loose one every time.
• Ties, i-cord threaded through eyelets, or a button strap across the instep all add security — sew buttons on firmly and tug-test them.
• A firm garter-stitch sole, or a sewn-on suede or felt sole for pre-walkers, adds grip and durability.
• Knit three of a pattern rather than two. The spare will come in useful.

Techniques worth learning here

Booties are a friendly place to practise short rows for a rounded heel, kitchener stitch for an invisible toe, picking up stitches evenly along a sole edge, and three-needle bind-off. If you're new to double-pointed needles, a bootee is a far less daunting introduction than a full sock — you're only working a handful of rounds before the shaping begins.

Finishing, gifting and care

Weave in ends along the inside of the sole seam where nothing will rub. Give a very light steam block rather than a wet block so the fabric stays crisp. Booties make wonderful gifts paired with a matching hat or a small blanket, tied together with ribbon; include a note about washing, or tuck the ball band into the parcel so the new parents know whether they can machine-wash them.
