Choose solid or tonal fabric by base cloth and value

This range includes true solids, mottled near-solids, textured-looking prints, poplin and batik-style basics. These fabrics can create backgrounds and blenders, but they are not technically identical. Confirm composition, width, weight, weave, care and sales unit before comparing colour.

Compare Kona Cotton and Bella Solids

Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton and Moda Bella Solids offer broad solid-colour ranges. A shade name from one brand does not guarantee a match in another. Compare physical swatches under daylight and the lighting where the finished project will be used.

Use Tilda and Confetti solids

Tilda Solid Colour and Riley Blake Confetti Cottons provide additional solid ranges. Check fibre and weight and wash a joined swatch before combining brands. Small differences in shrinkage or surface can become visible across a quilt grid.

Choose Cotton Couture from specification

Michael Miller Cotton Couture identifies cotton in its name, but use the full current composition, width and care. Test opacity and drape for garments and seam pressing and fraying for patchwork.

Sew with plain cotton poplin

Rose & Hubble Cotton Poplin Plain can offer a crisper woven option. Follow the sewing pattern's fabric recommendation. Poplin may behave differently from quilting cotton in drape, structure and seam bulk.

  • Confirm solid or near-solid appearance.
  • Compare undertone and value physically.
  • Read fibre, width and weight.
  • Test shrinkage and colour transfer.
  • Calculate from usable width and cut unit.

Use Grunge as a near-solid

Moda Grunge Basics adds visible tonal texture and is not a flat solid. Check how much contrast appears in the selected shade and whether the print has a preferred direction. Large panels reveal more variation than small patches.

Blend with Bumbleberries

To plan a project with Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton, review project scope, materials, tools and finishing requirements for Solid and Tonal Sewing Fabrics, including how it works with your materials and available time. When shortlisting Moda Bella Solids, consider the intended project, material specification and finishing needs for Solid and Tonal Sewing Fabrics, and use those details to plan quantities accurately.

Read Linen Texture cautiously

Makower Linen Texture describes a visual or range effect and does not prove linen fibre. Check composition, weight and care. Avoid mixing it with true linen or cotton based on name alone.

Compare Makower Spectrum

Spectrum may function as a solid or tonal basic depending on the exact design. Inspect a full-width image and physical swatch. Note shade and production information for large projects where lot variation could show.

Use Island Batik Basics

Check both sides, colour variation and current care. Test dark and saturated shades for transfer before sewing beside pale fabrics. Do not make unverified origin or manufacturing-process claims from the range name.

Build contrast by value

Photograph the fabric arrangement in greyscale. If adjacent blocks merge, choose a clearly lighter or darker basic. Hue difference alone may not provide enough contrast for piecing, appliqué or accessibility.

Label every chosen shade and arrange the complete palette at its intended proportions before ordering yardage.

Calculate borders and binding

For borders, add finished lengths and seam allowances and consider whether strips must be continuous. For binding, calculate perimeter, overlap, strip width and joins. Round to the retailer's sales increment and allow for straightening and shrinkage.

Are all featured fabrics flat solids?

No. Grunge, Bumbleberries, Linen Texture and Island Batik Basics can have tonal or printed variation.

Are all products pure cotton?

No conclusion should be drawn from titles alone. Check the full fibre composition for every exact fabric.

Can quilting basics make garments?

Sometimes, when weight, drape and opacity suit the pattern. Test the actual cloth rather than applying a universal rule.

How much fabric should I order?

Use the pattern layout, selected size, usable width, cut increment and allowances for washing, tests, matching and alterations.
