How to make macrame plant pot holders

Materials
- Hoooked Zpagetti Solid
- 1 ball in shade Off White (28)
- Dylon Hand dye in Ocean Blue
- Scissors
- Wooden curtain ring
Macrame plant pot holders are all the rage at the moment — and this dip dyed cotton yarn version is a nice twist on the more traditional 1970s string. Perfect for your hanging succulents and cacti but also great for keeping odds and ends in too.
How to make the hangers

Cut 8 lengths of white Hoooked yarn each around 1.5m long.

Gather them all together and tie a knot at one end leaving about 15 cm to create a tassel. Trim the ends level.

Lay on a flat surface and take the first two strands of yarn (1 and 2) and tie a knot about 5cm up from the large knot.

Repeat with the next two lengths of yarn (3 and 4) then continue until you have tied four knots. This completes the first row.

To make the second row of knots. Take the 2nd and 3rd strand of yarn and tie together 5cm up from the first row of knots.

Then take the 4th and 5th strands of yarn and knot, then the 6th and 7th. Finally take the 1st and 8th strands of yarn and knot together. This is when the basket shape starts to form.

To make the third row: tie the 1st and 2nd strand together then continue tying 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th, then finally 7th and 8th. Make sure the knots are 5 or more centimeters away from the second row to allow the basket to open fully.

Take the curtain ring and thread all 8 strands of yarn through. Then tie a knot as if you were tying a neck tie.

Trim away extra yarn.

Make up the Dylon hand dye according to the instructions.
A) Wash the macrame pot holder and leave to dry until it is still a little damp.
B) Carefully lower the holder into the dye so that it covers all of the knots.
C) Make sure you keep the rest of the holder out of the dye – use a clothes peg to attach it to the side of the dye bowl or just hang it over the side.
D) Leave it in the dye for around 20 minutes.
E) The dye will slowly creep up the damp yarn creating a nice ombré effect.

Remove from the dye, rinse and allow to dry.
Here’s an added extra for the more adventurous among you!
When you have a tub of dye on the go, it’s hard not to experiment and dye anything and everything that is lying around. Dip dye pompoms look great – I made these ones using MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran. But be warned, they take a lot longer to dry!
