Published on November 15, 2019 4 min read

Christmas will be here before you know it, and if you want to get crafting for the big day there’s no time like the present! Grab your hooks and make a set of Kate Eastwood’s beautiful bauble coasters.

Whether you use them for a cozy evening hot cocoa, or decorate your table with them when the bubbles start flowing – this simple make can be hooked up in no time.

This fabulously festive pattern also includes an adorable little basket for the coasters to be stored in, making them easy to pack away at the end of the season, ready to be used again next year.

Bear in mind, this pattern is written in UK crochet terms.

How to make the plain bauble coaster

Pro Tip

The coasters are worked in a continuous round in DC stitch.

1

Round 1: Use one strand of Simply DK and one strand of Goldfingering yarn with a 3.5mm hook to make a magic ring and work 8 DC into the ring.

2

Round 2: Continuing straight on from Round 1 in a continuous circle, work 2 DC in to each stitch from round 1. 16 sts.

3

Round 3: *Work 1 DC in to the next stitch , followed by 2DC in to the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * all the way around, 24 sts.

4

Round 4: *Work 1 DC in to each of the next 2 stitches, followed by 2DC in to the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * all the way around, 32 sts.

5

Round 5: *Work 1 DC in to each of the next 3 stitches, followed by 2DC in to the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * all the way around, 40 sts.

6

Round 6: Work a round of DC, 40 sts.

7

Round 7:  *Work 1 DC in to each of the next 4 stitches, followed by 2DC in to the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * all the way around, 48 sts.

8

Round 8: Work a round of DC, 48 sts. Finish off and sew in the ends.

Pro Tip

To work the edge of your coaster, use two strands of Goldfingering yarn to rejoin your yarn and work a round of DC, 48sts. At the end of the round SL ST to join and chain 1.

How to make the top of the bauble

1

Work 5 DC, CH 1 and turn.

2

Work a 3 further rows of 5 DC, remembering to chain 1 and turn at the end of each row.

3

Finish off and sew in the ends.

4

To complete your bauble coaster, add a small bow in a coordinating ribbon at the base of the bauble top and a strip of ribbon at the top of the bauble. Both of these can be stitched on with a needle and thread.

How to make the stripy bauble coaster

The stripy bauble is made to exactly the same pattern as the plain bauble, the only difference being that an alternating color is added at the end of each round. Again, two strands of yarn are used, one strand of Simply DK and one strand of Goldfingering in Gold.

For a tidy color, join when working the last stitch of each round and use your new color as the yarn over on this final stitch.

How to make the basket

1

Round 1: Using two strands of Simply DK and a 4.5mm hook, make a magic ring and work 6 DC in to the ring. Sl St to join, chain 1 and then work 2 DC in to each stitch from round 1, 12 sts. sl st to join and ch 1.

2

Round 2: Work 1 DC in to the first stitch and then 3 DC in to the next stitch. *Work 1 DC in to each of the next 2 stitches and then work 3DC all in to the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * twice more, work 1 DC in to the next stitch and then Sl St to join. Ch 1. 20 sts.

3

Round 3: Work 1 DC in to each of the next two stitches and then 3 DC in to the next stitch. *Work 1 DC in to each of the next 4 stitches and then work 3DC in to the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * twice more, work 1 DC in to each of the next two stitches and then Sl St to join. Ch 1. 28 sts.

4

Rounds 4 to 9: Continue as for rounds 2 and 3, adding 2 DC to the straight row section of each side. Your stitch count will increase by 8 for each round. At the end of round 9 you will have 76 sts. Finish off and sew in the ends.

5

Place your square with the right side facing you, rejoin your yarn at any point, and working in to the top (front) loop only, work a round of DC, 76 sts. At the end of the round Sl St to join and CH 1.

6

Now working in both loops again, work a further 5 rounds of DC, 76 sts. Sl St to join, finish off and sew in the ends.

7

To complete your basket, use a 3.5mm hook and two strands of Goldfingering yarn to work a round of DC, 76sts. Sl St to join at the end of the round and CH 1.

8

To finish the edge of your basket, work a final round of rope stitch. This is a round of DC, but worked clockwise, rather than the usual counterclockwise. Sl St to join at the end of the round, finish off and sew in the ends.
