What is Being Made

Zingiber is a top-down cardigan with an integrated hood, designed as an unisex garment that accommodates all body shapes with a straight body silhouette. Named after the Zingiber genus—the Latin name for warming plants including ginger, turmeric, and cardamom—this design combines functional style with decorative cable work. The cardigan features raglan sleeves, cabled patch pockets, and an optional hood that can be left out of the finished garment if preferred.

Construction and Design Features

This cardigan is constructed using the top-down method, allowing knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length as needed. The hood is worked last and shaped using short rows for a custom fit. The body maintains a straight construction throughout, making it suitable for various body types without complex shaping.

The most striking design element is a wide four-leaf cable panel that runs down the back of the cardigan against a reverse stockinette background. Cabled patch pockets add textural interest and coordinate with the back panel design. The combination of cables and reverse stockinette creates visual depth and dimension.
