Yellow Submarine Hat by yellowcosmo
What is Being Made
The Yellow Submarine Hat is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Connie Peng that features two distinct design variations. This intermediate-level project offers knitters the choice between two creative colorwork options: the Bubbles design and the Stripes O' Waves design. Both variations are available in multiple sizes, allowing knitters to customize their finished hat to their preferred fit.
Design Variations
- Version 1 – Bubbles Design: Features a playful bubble motif worked into the hat using colorwork techniques
- Version 2 – Stripes O' Waves Design: Showcases a wave-inspired striped pattern that evokes an oceanic theme
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs stranded knitting, also known as Fair Isle knitting, as the primary colorwork technique. Stranded knitting involves carrying two colors of yarn simultaneously while working stitches, creating intricate multicolored patterns. The pattern includes essential guidance for executing stranded knitting successfully, emphasizing the importance of maintaining even tension throughout the work. Knitters are advised to keep tension slightly loose rather than tight to ensure the fabric remains flexible and the colorwork sits properly on the finished hat.
A critical technique covered in the pattern is managing long floats – the strands of yarn carried across the back of the work when more than five consecutive stitches use the same color. Proper float management prevents loose, snagging floats on the interior of the hat and ensures a professional finish.
Stitches and Stitch Work
While the pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches as the foundation, the primary focus is on the colorwork integration through stranded knitting methods. The pattern guides knitters through catching floats of the non-working yarn on the back of the fabric at strategic intervals to maintain structural integrity and prevent excessive yarn floats.
Yarn and Materials
The Yellow Submarine Hat pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides excellent stitch definition for displaying the colorwork patterns. The pattern examples showcase several premium yarn options:
- Wool2Dye4 Platinum Sock: A versatile sock-weight yarn available in custom dyed colors, including the Logwood Gray and Rabbit Rubberbrush flower-dyed variations shown in the Version 1 sample
- Madelinetosh Tosh Sock in Baltic: Featured as the main color in the Version 2 example
- The Sanguine Gryphon Little Traveller in Mandalay: Used as the contrast color in the Version 2 sample
Knitters will need appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn to work this pattern. The use of quality sock-weight yarns ensures that the intricate colorwork details remain crisp and well-defined in the finished hat.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Yellow Submarine Hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical abilities. The stranded knitting technique requires practice to master tension and float management, making this pattern an excellent stepping stone for developing advanced colorwork skills.
