Product Description
Designed for the YarnOver Truck Fandom club this cowlette was inspired by the villain Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove. Yzma sports some over-the-top elaborate neckwear in the film and it is ALWAYS in purple. Of course you can use whatever color fits your nefarious plans.
While it might look like this pattern is full of cables, there aren’t any! The illusion of cables is created through devious use of both crossed elongated stitches and passover cinched stitches, but there’s not an actual cable in sight.
Knitting begins worked flat and then is joined to knit in the round to create the voluminous cowlette shape that drapes beautifully along the neck.
Pattern can be worked entirely from written instructions or in conjunction with charts.
Stitches Used: k, k2tog, m1R, m1L, p, s1-wyif, ssk, YO

Wrong Lever Cowl by Barbara Benson
Project Overview
Wrong Lever is an intermediate-level knitted cowl design created by independent designer Barbara Benson. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a beautifully complex cowl inspired by the color palette of Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove, featuring rich hand-dyed purple yarn from Apple Tree Knits.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a cowl—a circular neckwear accessory that drapes around the shoulders and neck. The design showcases complex stitch work suitable for knitters with intermediate skill levels who are comfortable working with increases, decreases, and yarn-over techniques.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Increases: The pattern employs both m1R (make one right) and m1L (make one left) techniques, which involve picking up the strand of yarn running between stitches and knitting through the created loop. These directional increases are worked from different angles—m1R uses the left hand needle inserted from back to front, while m1L uses front to back insertion—to create balanced shaping.
- Decreases: Knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases are used throughout the pattern for structured shaping and stitch reduction.
- Yarn overs: YO (yarn over) stitches create decorative openwork elements and lace details within the cowl design.
- Slip stitches: The pattern includes s1-wyif (slip stitch with yarn in front) techniques for refined edge work and stitch manipulation.

Materials and Notions
The pattern is designed to showcase hand-dyed yarn in a rich purple colorway from Apple Tree Knits. Knitters will need standard knitting needles in the appropriate size for their chosen yarn weight, as specified in the pattern's gauge requirements. Essential notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and at least one stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and shaping sections.
Pattern Structure
The Wrong Lever cowl utilizes repeating stitch sequences, indicated by rep notation throughout the pattern instructions. The design works across right side (RS) and wrong side (WS) rows, requiring knitters to maintain awareness of which side they are working on as they execute the various increases, decreases, and decorative elements.
